Good book, again an interesting premise. I liked how the writer carried the different personas throughout the books despite the obvious differences, and its creatively done. Doesn't remind me of Stephanie Meyer's style of writing, so I'm happy. Too bad it ended on a massive cliffhanger, I cannot wait for the next to come out!

It was so good it hurt. Really good. Matterhorn makes it clear you will NEVER understand what it is like to go to war, unless you are one of the warriors in the fight. But he will drag you into a world that seems so immediate and real, you will come out drained. It took him 30 years to write the story and it paid off, every detail, scene and emotion is captured brilliantly. It may be “fiction” but it reads as ground truth. I guarantee any student of war will put this book on the permanent shelf. I can hardly wait to reread it… My copy is filled with little pieces of paper marking scenes and passages that absolutely gripped me. The description of the racial animosities at the time and the bonds of shared sacrifice overcoming hate are so vivid. The mentality of the career officers and the line grunts, those who were staff pukes and those who knew the shitty math of trading bodies for terrain yet went out and fought…at every turn you will be angry, pissed off, amazed, sad, occasionally bemused, you will run through the gamut of emotions in the course of this book. So many passages are great but here are two that should piqué your interest. The warrior vs. the disdainful college crowd. (view spoiler) They don’t fight for the flag or the leaders or some vague idea. They fight for each other. The attack on Helicopter Hill: (view spoiler) Damn this is a good book…and that was a complete understatement.

Landes tries to weave together geography, culture and politics to figure out how the West 'won,' but the resulting latticework is not as tight as it could be, despite the author's incredible erudition. The main problem? He just tries to do too much. Geography is not destiny for every country; nor are cultural mores or political restraints at all consistent in human history, although all three play roles in determining a nation's fate. Landes can't seem to get away from homogenizing thousands of societies throughout history to fit a thesis that is, ultimately, a bit fragile. Still, highly recommended, if just for the breadth and depth of what you'll learn just by listening to this guy.

A nice document of a scene neglected by legend. I could've done with more oral history and less poorly-written narrative. This book helps backup the banality of punk, especially when read after Please Kill Me. Most of these dudes come off as vacuous characters who work really hard at standing for nothing. There are some positive takeaways, though. Seeing the importance of the Touch and Go zine was cool. The young-versus-old dynamic was interesting, too. Punks project nonconformist values, but the young kids write off the older punks as soon as they start to deviate from the dominant sound.

there were some graphic parts in the beginning, that as a mother holding a brand new baby, i could not get over.....hence the 'lower rating'

Review coming 8/1/11 at www.ieatwords.net! :) I had been wanting to read this book for such a long time! Britney did a video review on it on our YouTube channel (icon to the right) gushing about it, and I hoped I would like it as much as she did. I loved the plot and characters. In the beginning, DeStefano sets up this dark, bleak world that's almost a satire on what modern day society could be. Rhine (I just LOVE that name!) is a strong main character, but I liked that she still had her flaws. She's caring and compassionate but it seems like at times she had trouble grasping her emotions. I adored Cecily and Jenna, too. They were polar opposites, but that's what made them stand out to me. Cecily is overly emotional, dramatic, and young-spirited, whereas Jenna seems uncaring and self-absorbant, even though she has a soft interior. Then there are the boys, Linden and Gabriel. The one thing I did love about this story is that you can never really hate Linden. He's too innocent and kind-hearted. Even though I really wanted to find a reason to dislike him, I couldn't. I wish there were more scenes with Gabriel because I loved the way Rhine opened herself up when she was around him. The plot within this dystopian world is believable. I felt myself getting sucked in because even though we really don't see Rhine's brother, I wanted her to find her way back to him. And as she grew more attached to Gabriel, I wanted him to experience life outside of the house walls as well. I wanted to keep reading to find out what would happen and what the Housemaster had to do with keeping everyone confined within the walls of the manor. The only microscopic, tiny complaint I had was with the writing style. DeStefano has a way with words and her writing is beautiful, but a part of me wished there was more interaction through showing instead of telling. I felt left out when I would read about all the moments Jenna or Rose shared with Rhine, and I wanted to know what they were talking about, what was being shared, and how that made them connect. Other than that, her writing left me emotionally attached to Cecily, Rhine, Linden, and Gabriel. In the end, I actually felt my heartstrings break a little for Linden and Cecily. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure, dystopian, and mystery. It was a wonderful read that I had a hard time putting down.

A quiet, thoughtful book that stayed with me long after I read it. I read it over again whenever I need a reminder of how powerful clean, pure, distilled prose can be.

I waited for LFA excitedly. I was not disappointed. While YA in genre, I think all adults can relate to LFA -- maybe even better than the target YA audience. I heard John speak through his characters (literally, as I knew him in college) and was given permission to add this book to my extensive collection (long story, involving 23 boxes of books when we last moved...). A worthy addition to any library.

Great, light read - really good perspective on human nature and growing old! (or watching others grow old)

Milo.
