This book offers very interesting context to what is known of Mary Magdalene and her relationship with Jesus. Historical facts about Jewish life & customs during the time in which Jesus lived adds a level of understanding that goes beyond anything that many modern-day Christian faiths offer. It speaks to the humanity of the individuals in this story.

Haunting, beautifully rendered, and implacably paced, this is one of my favorite books of the past few years. It's right up there with--and similar in tone and theme to--Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell. While JS&MN holds a very special place in my heart (and Top Ten all-time list), Night Circus is an excellent tome that does not suffer in comparison. Rich characters, lavish atmospheres, and compelling scenes make it hard to put down, and memorable. There are so many books that, even with good bits and pieces, just kind of slide off of my brain. Night Circus "sticks", in a good way. I could go on and on, but reviews seem to be split as to whether you love or are underwhelmed by this. It may be a bit slow-paced for some, but it's nowhere near as ponderous as anything written more than 30 years ago, and the characters are so interesting and the events so richly rendered that I frankly didn't care. This isn't an action book, or a romance, really. It's a dream, just like the circus. But for those who want action--heck, there's even an explosion in there.

As I read through the vignettes and essays included here, one thought kept coming up - A giant in out day, and I missed him. So, I asked my wife (she lived in Boston) - Did she ever go to hear him - "Once " she says. I asked my neighbor (He has a degree from YU) - Did he ever go learn? - "Occasioanlly - I was not in that depth". Well- neither am I, and the opportunity was not there. Maybe once in a lifetime, we have such opportunity to know of someone like this. Andif the chance is there to hear the person - do SO!. If not, then read and read more about him. The Rav was a MAYBE once in a lifetime phenomena.

Can't say it enough... I love this woman. The funny thing about this book is that it's about her views on dating... which I don't necessarily agree with but it is funny.

Out of Whack is yet another winner from Jeff strand. It is not horror though, not even a little, unless you count some of the demented skits that Seth writes up. It is an incredibly fun read though and, like the Andrew Mayhem series, is full of random jokes, interruptions, characters, and so on. As you read, you will come accross things like "Lord of the Unzipped Flies" and statements about toilets with attitude problems that just won't take shit from anybody. The book also contains one of the funniest worst first date stories I have ever heard. The main goal of Seth and his friend Travis ultimately becomes to form a comedy group and it is very interesting to hear how they try to make it in a world that is very unforgiving when it comes to un-funny comedians. All in all, a very good, yet exhausting read for me. It was a bit like watching the extended version of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. It is very funny but after a while the constent randomness, joke after joke, and contradictions become slightly trying.
