This review may also be found on A Thousand Little Pages. I am not much of a Middle Grade reader. You could say that I sort of skipped a step in my reading repertoire while growing up, jumping directly from children’s books like Magic Tree House to YA like The Hunger Games. Maybe I should go back and fill in that gaping MG hole now, because The Star Shard exceeded expectations. I was waiting for simplicity and frankly, not much depth. This is a MG faerie fantasy after all. Plus, I admit that my opinion of MG is not terribly high (very hypocritical, I know, since I haven’t read a lot of MG). I was, however, not prepared to be bombarded by the deliciousness that is this slightly rustic high fantasy world and a 12-year-old heroine that displays a lot more common sense than the average hormonal-driven and air-headed YA protagonist. Our darling main character Cybril is a slave on the Thunder Rake. Sold into this giant wheeled city at an early age, Cybril survives, as per Master Rombol’s orders, by singing for crowds during market days. There are snippets of lyrics spread throughout The Star Shard and even complete sheet music for two of the songs. Is that not the coolest supplementary material you’ve ever seen? And then of course, we have Loric, the faerie lad with the silver eyes and enigmatic smile -- as much as young boys’ smiles can be enigmatic, I suppose. Cybril and Loric develop an awkward fascination with each other that later fleshes out into an adorable friendship and maybe even a relationship-to-be. With a plot fraught with twists and turns, skeleton keys and potion-induced beauty, The Star Shard reads like a clear well of water. It’s refreshing and free of angst or love triangles. Just pure adventure. And two little children desperately sprinting together toward their shared finish line, hand-in-hand. Book Source: ARC via VOYA

Pretty amazing. I enjoy this man's narrative voice. It's like he's painted himself as a cartoon character (probably DC or Dark Horse) who's continually being proven wrong about his master plans and his views on people.

Literacy skills: Narrative skills-repeated phrasing throughout helps children build narrative skills Print motivation-This is one in a series of books about Bear. This connection that grows with the characters in the story will help build a love of books for the child.

OH MY GOD!!! Next time I need a good cry I will pick up either this book or "It's Not Summer Without You" and I will re-read them and weep! Belly, Isabelle, has always spent summers with the Fisher family in their beach house. Susannah Fisher is like a second mother to Belly and both Conrad and Jeremiah treat Belly like an annoying little sister, that is until this year. This book gives the appearance of being a light-hearted girly romance - but don't be fooled!! This is a touching story of growing up, extended family and first love. It deals with some honest and real situations in a lovely way and I could completely relate to secretly pining over the "close family friend" (although if you ask my mother it was not so much of a secret!!) For me, Belly became such a real and well rounded character to me so that when she was happy, I was happy and when she was sad, I weeped!! If you are looking for a YA book which is more than a book about a teen crush then I would turn you around, march you to the nearest bookshop and order you buy a copy!

Another strong novel my Robert. I know he aims these books for teenagers, but I still love the storylines and the writing. The pages just fly by! The only issue I really had with this book was the ending that just sort of tapered off unlike the rest of his books which generally end with a BANG followed by a slight conclusion. It's not like the story didn't have it's highlights (it did), I just wasn't expecting pages of nothingness after the major plot line had ceased. Even with this, I'd still highly recommend the book to others and can't wait until next year when the next book in this new and exciting series is released!

I am not going to go into detail about what the book is about as the synopsis does a good job of that and there are plenty of reviews out there that gives more detail. I have never read a Kaylea Cross book before so didn't really know what to expect. I had seen quite a few raving reviews about this book and I had had it for quite a while but hadn't got around to reading it but as soon as I started the first chapter I knew that I was going to enjoy the rest of the book. I immediately tuned into Kaylea's style of writing and was gripped from start to finish; she provides so much military detail that a lot of authors tend to skip over. I will admit at times I had to stop and think what was she talking about and on a few occasions even grabbed my phone and hit the internet to find things out, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book in fact it increased it - that extra detail helped me to try and visualise the scene and what could possibly be going on. Due to daily life I was forced to stop reading several times but continued to think about it and couldn't wait to pick it up again and carrying on reading and I ended up staying up into the early hours of the morning as I was gripped and just couldn't put it down. I really liked Devon, she was a strong and very brave woman who had fears and insecurities which made her character believable. Cam was a sexy hero who would do anything to save the woman that he loved even if that included dying himself. What I really liked about this story was that Devon and Cam had declared their love for each other before the mission went sour - In most stories the H and h continue to hide their feelings for each other right until the end. All of the men featured were super fit and super sexy and I am so looking forward to reading Ryan's story. In my opinion this book fully deserves the top rating of 5 stars and if you are looking for a book that is about military men and is full of suspense, romance and a lot of sexual tension then this is the book for you and I am definitely rating Kaylea Cross as one of my RS authors. According to Kaylea's website (@ March 2012) she is in the process of writing the second book in the series and has a working title of 'Danger Close' - Unfortunately there is no expected publication date yet http://kayleacross.com/v2/coming-soon/ ARC kindly supplied by Carina Press via Netgalley

18th century China isn't what usually grabs me...but Liz recommended this read, so I gave it a shot. Wonderfully writeen, it caught my attention from the beginning and kept it until the very end. As the characters developed, so did my interest in the Chinese culture and tradition. A real good read.

This book made me pretty angry, but I expected it would. They present a lot of good tips at the end for how to make a difference. One assertion in the book really disturbed me - that we only have 10 to make a significan impact on our climate changing activities before irreversible damage is done and climate change starts to free-fall.
