Just picked this book off the library shelves as this author was this month's Romance Reader's monthly author challange. Liked the storyline and now realizing there's books that come before I'm most likely to go back and read them in order.

Thisis a follow up comment from Night Shift. So, Corey in turn lent me this book, which was his airport impluse buy, I think. BTW, my ratings on goodreads have very little to do with the literature's actual integrity. I have been known to judge most everything almost entirely on sentiment.

it was good, but the subject matter of the stories didn't really vary, maybe that was his ploy to create cohesion for his collection. but it got a bit boring after all. i still prefer novels over short stories though.

Another good book. Boy have I been lucky so far this month. This is the story of a Korean picture bride who comes to Hawaii thinking the streets are made of gold, and how she lives her life once she learns that it's not true. I picked the book up because it's the same author as Molokai, which I absolutely loved. This book was very good, and very enjoyable, but didn't have that same wow factor. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the stories, the way she became hawaiian. It was all very good. Just not quite great, though I can't explain what kept it out of 5 star category. I guess if nothing else, Molokai was an outstanding first book, and a hard one to follow up with anything. I would recommend this book as an enjoyable read, an interesting story, and an opportunity to learn about the patchwork quilt that was and is Hawaii. I'll definitely read it again.

What's better than a series you can rely on to provide solid plots with intriguing twists spiced by the occasional sexy romps? All that with ongoing character development! I love seeing the growth Elena is making, and the way her relationship with Clay deepens and matures over time. I can't think of much to say without giving away too much to those familiar with the series. I doubt this is the best place for readers new to Women of the Otherworld to start, simply because they wouldn't get the full effect of the continuity, but they wouldn't be lost, either. I loved it!

This was an enjoyable piece of fiction. I liked the Spoon River Anthology structure. Each chapter has a headline and covers one of the characters in an English language newspaper office in Rome. Some of the characters are casually mentioned in other stories, but it is not a traditional narrative. I would have liked to hear more about some of them, but mostly I was content. I was much less interested in the italicized 2-3 page bits about the history of the paper in between chapters. I didn't think the format worked and the story wasn't excessively interesting. I am left a little bit wondering whether I was tricked into reading a whodunit. Was the point of the format introducing the characters to leave you to guess who (view spoiler)? I didn't like that denouement; I thought it was cheap and also not believable. I mean, these are civilized, intellectual people. I know there is violence at all levels of society but really, (view spoiler)? So the ending kind of soured my reading of the rest of the book. Still, worth a read if you just want a story and aren't expecting anything stunning, challenging, or thought-provoking.

OK. I'm mixed about this book. I had a few people ask me as I was reading it if I liked it. I had to respond "yes" and "no." I had a hard time getting into the story, but I wanted to keep reading because the writing is beautiful. The story did pick up and there were parts I connected with, but the characters were not very sympathetic and I never really felt the love story between Florentino and Fermina. A particularly disturbing part in the book is Florentino's sexual relationship with a 14 year old when he is in his 70s. Why was that even put in the book? Most of the time I just wanted Florentino to get over it, or rather get over Fermina, and get on with his life -- he could have had real love with Leona, but he let that pass by because of his obsession with Fermina. When I finished the book, I mostly felt relief that it was over!
