This book definitely surprised me. Maybe I hadn't read that much about it. But when what I thought was a sort of coming of age novel which I was growing bored with morphed into a semi-detective story, I was really drawn in. While some are annoyed with all of her literary references and metaphors, I found I liked them. I think that given this is Pessl's first novel, there is much more good to come from her as she matures her way out of the need to "test her readers."

Love Fulghum's basic theories. Makes me laugh and re-think.

On not being able to create. I fear being found out as a fraud - not being a 'real artist'. This helped me realize that I am not the only one.

Loved this story. Not only was the story of the horse who was saved from death encouraging and hopeful but it was full of interesting horse facts and facts related to jumping horses for competition.

After I finally got over the fact that this so vastly different than any other book McKinley has written I decided I liked it. I like her take on vampires and the other Others. I really liked Sunshine I am surprised that she did not write a follow up. Good, interesting read.

This book can be used when teaching about family. I really liked how the mother disciplined David, but at the end she told him that she loves him. Sometimes the students may not understand why teachers and parents are telling them no and they may think that it's we are just being mean. I think with this book you can show the students you are just looking out for their best interest. It can also be used on the first day of school when you are discussing rules.

The Reserve is hailed as “love story, part murder-mystery, set on the cusp of the second world war” as claimed by the book jacket. I had already read and loved Banks’ Cloudsplitter, so I was eager to read another book by the author. The story opened with the arrogant Jordan Banks, architect, visiting the wealthy Cole family in their Adirondack home. The characters bored me, quite frankly, and the storyline didn’t even give me the slightest interest until page 82, when we find out that Vanessa Cole is a lunatic. Unfortunately, even that wasn’t enough to save the story for me. And, to make matters worse, the Spanish Civil War and Hindenburg flashbacks didn’t work here at all. They seem thrown in haphazardly in a deliberate attempt to point out contrasts in the characters. Instead, it just seemed like you were watching television and someone changed the channel for a moment. Overall, a disappointing read.

Beautiful and tragic, this story of unexceptional people trying to make more of their lot carries weight with everyone; no one wants to feel average but the struggle to be 'special' can consume. Fantastic.

Another great Brad Meltzer book read by one of my favorite narrators, Scott Brick. Good plot ties in a few characters from Meltzer's book "The Book of Fate" but you won't be lost if you haven't read "The Book of Fate" first. This story stands on it's own.
