Favorite Lines: “I wondered if he realized the power of his stare. If he had any idea the effect it had on me. Perhaps that should have been another warning—the fact that I couldn’t tear my gaze from him. It was as if he had some sort of hold over me, but I couldn’t put the blame on him. I was solely responsible for my actions.” (p. 94) Amanda Stevens sure knows how to write an intriguing and creepy story and she showcases her talent in The Restorer. The Restorer is book one in Stevens’ Queen of the Cemetery trilogy. There is a prequel, The Abandoned, available for download at Harlequin’s website. As I write this the prequel is free, but that could change at any moment. It’s listed at $2.99. But back to The Restorer. The entire time I read this book I felt like there should be eerie piano music playing. You know the type that plays as the suspense builds during a movie. Instead of the music playing for a few seconds before exploding into action, it built and built until I almost couldn’t stand it. I wanted the other shoe to drop so that I could pick myself up. It was GREAT! Any book that is capable of building tension without introducing gore is alright by me. The Restorer left me feeling uncertain and jumpy. It’s a strong paranormal suspense with a touch of “will they be drawn into a love affair?” The would-be romance aspect adds depth to the spooky story which is told in first person point-of-view from Amelia’s perspective. The slow pacing helps create a chilling tone to the book which some readers may find off-putting. I feel like it adds to the story making it believable. Conclusion: I would recommend this book to people who don’t care if the story has a happily ever after/clear, every problem solved ending.. It’s an urban fantasy that focuses on the fantastic. It is not the action packed UF that has been flooding the market over the past several years, but it is filled with good stuff. Don’t read it if you are looking to race through a story, but if you want a look into the uncanny check this story out. I’m not sure how long the contest is open, but Stevens is hosting a giveaway at her blog for signed copies of The Restorer. There’s also an excerpt posted on the author’s site if you want to read a little before you buy the book. Scooper Speaks

Absolutely stellar! Suspense, drama, and a creatively designed distopic world! I picked this book up on the suggestion of a friend and I cannot thank her enough! This book was absolutely stellar! There s suspense, drama, and a creatively designed dystopic world! The characters have depth and are very engaging as they race around an arena trying to kill each other! Before getting ahead of ourselves, some back ground information is necessary. When global warming destroys the United States, the remaining land is divided up between 13 districts. When District 13 decides to fight back at the inordinate amount of control the central government is exerting, they are put down and destroyed. As a reminder of this ill-advised uprising, every year there is a nationally televised gladiator-esque game show pitting two contestants from each district against everyone else in a battle to the death. Katniss, our 16 year-old volunteer, is a strong, determined heroine. If she can be called that. Her drive to return home forces her to be brutal and harsh, while she is still likable as a character. Her alter-ego Peeta, also from her district, is generous to a fault. The story follows them as they try to escape the other 22 players and learn of the evil that lurks in the government. Do they make it out? Read it and discover the truth!

I wish this book delved deeper into how Deo survived his amazing ordeals, both in war-torn Burundi and New York. On around page 100, Kidder even poses the question of how a man with no contacts, very little money, and no grasp of English could go from being homeless in Central Park to Columbia University in a very short time. Unfortunately, he writes 150 or so more pages without answering that. Nor does he wonder how a man who cannot sleep because of (understandably) atrocious nightmares manages to get straight A's in medical school. I don't doubt Deo's accomplishments; I want to know more about how he was able to manage these and other feats. I finished the book and still don't know.

Dammit -- I tried. I really tried. It's just too long, and I'm not on a 3 week long ocean voyage with nothing else to do. There are cheesy zombie novels needing to be read.

I was excited about the premise of this book. I love a strong female character...hence my latest obsession with Buffy. Unfortunately, this book was a little too much action and not enough character development for me. I felt like I was watching 24...and I'm not a fan. I was much more interested in all of Mercy's friends/male interests and her relationships with them, than the storyline itself. For the first time ever reading a book, I had to stop and think about who was talking. I think that's because there really wasn't a lot of character development...just names of all the men that were in or coming into her life. I hope the series gets better, so I will probably give the next one a try.

Difficult to read this book. Difficult to start this book. I thought there were holes in the writing. There were paragraphs of pronouns where I didn't know which he was which person. Saying that, great scope. "Epic". Imaginary island in the Caribbean. It's about love, and its many forms. Some good ideas there. Sparking thinking about loves in one's life = life. -- "provocative" I didn't like the writing, I didn't like the style of writing. I thought perhaps it was the translation, but no, I think it was the writing. I didn't think it was poetic. I thought his scene transitions were quite deft. I thought the plot paths were also excellent, unexpected. Not trite. I would not want to read this book again.
This book is exquistely written. Great development of character and you can't stop reading it. I saw the movie before I read the book so I knew the storyline and was pleased to see that the movie kept true to the book. The author truly captures the grueling life of a circus performer during the great depression. Amazing book!!
