This was unexpectedly bland. Admittedly I came into it after seeing the trailers for the movie, which seem to imply that Kyle's been horribly disfigured but not ACTUALLY turned into a Beast, so when I realized we were really going to that fairy-tale place my reaction was "oh, no". And unfortunately, the author doesn't do that much to liven up the story. I can almost see her pausing the Disney DVD, thinking a minute, and then adapting the movie as if it took place in the Gossip Girl universe. Ironically for a book that's meant to be about the importance of inner beauty, I'm left feeling that this was just very, very shallow. The characters rarely experience more than one emotion at a time, their language patterns shift in the most bizarre ways (a tutor inexplicably starts talking like an old-school English butler at one point, apropos of nothing), and honestly I thought "this is a scene directly out of the Disney movie" too often to count. Mirror? Roses? Books? Snowmen? Bleh. Maybe the movie will be better. Maybe the girl won't capitulate to her captivity in under 48 hours. Maybe the end will make a lick of bloody sense. But I'm not holding out much hope. OH! And what the hell was with the IM-style chat room exchanges between mythical creatures?! So now we're meant to think that not only Kyle, but an entire group of people have been hexed by witches? And that a frog and mermaid somehow have wifi connections (and hands, while we're at it). That was just the dumbest device I've seen in ages, even more so because it added nothing to the story AND was out of sequence with the rest of the book - the chat sessions are placed like chapter spacers, but we've already read a couple by the time Kyle mentions he's found the group online and is thinking of joining. Eh?! Time-traveling chat transcripts ahoy! If you're looking for a good fairy tale, go read "East of the Sun and West of the Moon", where arrogance is overcome and the peasant girl kicks ass. Best fairy tale ever. And skip "Beastly" unless you're a tween who's only just left the princess phase.
