This is a technical reference work on how to fly selected aircraft from World War II, so it's hardly deathless prose. But the notes inserted by editor and ferry pilot Hugh Bergel are funny and helpful, so it can't be called dry, either. Great reference for historical WW2 writers, all told.

I read the first book in this collection, "The House of Mirth." . . . . it was frustrating and depressing. I have not moved on to either of the others. I do love the old way of writing so I gave it three stars, but I found the inability of the characters to speak truthfully to each other, which would have made their lives soooo much easier in the first place, irritating! But then, I guess that was how it was in those days.

I admit that I am addicted to Alexander McCall Smith, a sucker for his gentle universe, a place where really bad things happen in the most human ways (view spoiler), but kindness and wisdom prevails. And in the ultimate test of all fiction, I find meaning and learn to live better. I do have to admit, however, that he seems to be in production mode, throwing the cast of Corduroy characters back in the pot and stirring up some new, slightly entwined stories. They lack depth and magic, and leave far too much unexplained, or just silly. (view spoiler) You can still keep the fans of all your series happy, Sandy, (forgive the intimacy, but we must speak man-to-man) but just take a little longer on each one and let them stew. I am powerless to resist these books, but I wish Sandy would remember that we love him for his wisdom, wit and unexpected story twists, not for the size of his canon. As the actress said of the Archbishop.

So after reading Slaughter House 5 in high school I was not all that impressed with this author. It had some good moments, but it was just plain weird so often and trying to follow the timeline was almost too confusing. So why exactly I decided to try another book I'm not sure. I read this on a whim and its comical and quirky style was perfect to read during the summer. I laughed out loud at several times while reading this book. It is certainly strange and full of a style all his own (when was the last time you read a book that had random pictures in it?). It was fun and intriguing to follow these characters on their strange and quirky stumbling through life.
