It is a good book but was slightly depressing to me. The story premise is very interesting though....a wife has two children, a normal boy and a girl with Down's syndrome. The husband hands the girl to the nurse and tells his wife the girl died during birth. The nurse then raises the girl as her own....

This well-written story was a little too close to home for me. I imagined myself losing parts of myself and not getting them back. It was a good read and I was, in the end, glad I had the opportunity to read it.

Okay, okay, okay...Margaret Mitchell's antebellum South is strictly the stuff dreams are made of, if you're white, Southern, and wealthy, that is. That said, this is a magnificent novel. I mean, it won the Pulitzer f'r heaven's sake. It is also one of the three great love stories of all time. (The other two being, of course, Rick and Ilsa's in "Casablanca" and your own).

I guess it's more of a 3.5 star book for me. The first half draaaaggggged (I almost gave up on it). It got better, then dragged again. Helen annoyed me through most of it. Descriptions of the war were incredible, however.

I liked this book. It is the first one in the series by Eriksson. I've been, as another reviewer said, working my way through Scandinavian crime fiction probably because I was impressed by the Stieg Larsson books. I never been a huge fan of crime fiction, because a lot of it is poorly written, but I'm happy to say that from what I have read in Scandinavian crime fiction so far, with the exception of one book, my impression doesn't hold true. This is well written and suspenseful. I did not know who did what to whom until it was relieved, which I think says something about the quality of the writing. There are two interlaced stories, and for a good half of the book, I was uncertain if they were related or parallel. I won't reveal which it is but suffice it to say that both stories have themes of loneliness, friendship and betrayal.

What can I say... if you love Cronenberg, you'll love this. Like all the greats, he didn't give a damn what anyone thought about how "out there" his ideas were, and was never afraid to go too far. This book gives me courage. I love this series of books... I would recommend these to anyone wanting to get into film/learn how to write screenplays, and suggest they stay the hell away from those Syd Field style hack books and those bougse film schools. The only way to learn is by watching the movies you love, figuring out how they did it, and trying it yourself. Getting the information straight from the directors' mouths is incredibly inspiring and beneficial, and very low on bullshit.

A man loves and loves and has a daughter while suffering from Chrono-displacement, meaning he time travels whenever he’s in danger or too upset… or sometimes at random moments. He can’t control his trips, and his destination in space and time, be the time future or past, is always a mystery. Very much like Slaughterhouse Five, including lack of ability to alter the past he visits or revisits. He visits the love of his life throughout her life and they finally marry and have a daughter. The daughter suffers from the same condition, but enjoys her jaunts through time. Interesting and well written- it makes the most of the short cuts the sci-fi plot allow and still manages to make you care about the characters. Neat trick of writing. Nifty stuff. I wanted to write this one off as chic-lit fluff, but I couldn't do it. From a craftsman perspective - the writer in you will respect the way she built this.

Can't quite get into the book -- I wanted to, I just can't. My father is an alcoholic and I wanted to read a book about someone who is an alcoholic and is in recovery. I was only reading the intro to this book, though, and Zailckas already annoyed me. For a page and a half, she's talking about how she drank all the time, sometimes blacked out because of her drinking, lost all of her friends, didn't do anything but drink for days on end. And then, in the very next sentence she wrote "But I'm not an alcoholic." Huh? I guess she was thinking of an alcoholic as only someone who suffered from the physical symptoms of alcohol. I guess I think of it as someone who has an emotional need for alcohol and when she said she wasn't an alcoholic, all I thought was "You're still in denial." I so wanted to read something by someone who had overcome the disease -- to somehow have hope that my dad could do it, too. But she denied it in the first few pages. Maybe she comes to terms with her disease later on, but right now, she's still in denial. And i don't know if I can read about it.
