This is a collection of stories centered around women who have crushes on other women (but not necessarily are lesbians). It could be the amazing actress who sends your mind reeling to “I wonder…” to a colleague or friend who seems to somehow push all the right buttons and make you ponder “what if…”. It’s all about curiosity here. As the editor points out, crushes are fantasies about unlikely relationships and I think we’ve all been there. Each story was extremely well-written and positively dripped with wanton question but like always, there were favorites with “The Out-of-Towner” by Delilah Devlin being the cream of this sensual crop.

This is one of the new range of Penguin Mini Modern Classics and contains seven of Saki's short stories: ‘Filboid Studge, the Story of a Mouse That Helped’, ‘Tobermory’, ‘Mrs Packletide’s Tiger’, ‘Sredni Vashtar’, ‘The Music on the Hill’, ‘The Recessional’ and ‘The Cobweb’. Saki’s stories are absolutely marvellous. They remind me a bit of E. F. Benson in their tone and focus on the foibles of the upper middle class, but unlike Benson (who I always feel has a soft spot for his characters no matter how much he may mock them) Saki is merciless in his approach. The stories are dry, witty and biting and if they were long enough for the reader to get to know the characters at all it would be easy for them to seem rather cruel, but because they are only brief snapshots the reader is able to laugh without any accompanying feeling of guilt. They may be a little bizarre and dark at times (‘Sredni Vashtar’ for example is the story of a young boy who has a pet ferret that he turns into a god) but they always have a proper narrative arc and so they are very satisfying to read. Although all the stories are entertaining, my two favourites are ‘Tobermory’ and ‘Mrs Packletide’s Tiger’. ‘Tobermory’ is about Mr Cornelius Appin, who announces at Lady Blemley’s weekend gathering that he has found a way to teach animals to talk and has successfully taught the cat, Tobermory, to talk. The guests however are less than impressed when it becomes apparent that Tobermory enjoys exercising his new linguistic talents to reveal all the secrets of the guests at the party to the assembled crowd: "An archangel ecstatically proclaiming the Millennium, and then finding that it clashed unpardonably with Henley and would have to be indefinitely postponed, could hardly have felt more crestfallen than Cornelius Appin at the reception of his wonderful achievement." I think this comparison is just brilliant in its bathos. It conveys how ludicrous the guests’ objections are in the face of such an amazing discovery and how bound they are by social convention. It makes me chuckle every time I read it. Saki also gives Tobermory a wonderful voice and personality which conveys a sense of relish at embarrassing and shaming his listeners with the things they say and do behind closed doors. I only wish it had been a longer tale. ‘Mrs Packletide’s Tiger’ concerns a lady who decides that she wants to shoot a tiger in order to outdo Loona Bimberton who has just flown in a aircraft. Soon a suitable candidate is found: "Circumstances proved propitious. Mrs Packletide had offered a thousand rupees for the opportunity of shooting a tiger without overmuch risk or exertion, and it so happened that a neighbouring village could boast of being the favoured rendezvous of an animal of respectable antecedents, which had been driven by the increasing infirmities of age to abandon gamekilling and confine its appetite to the smaller domestic animals. The prospect of earning the thousand rupees had stimulated the sporting and commercial instinct of the villagers; children were posted night and day on the outskirts of the local jungle to head the tiger back in the unlikely event of his attempting to roam away to fresh hunting-grounds, and the cheaper kinds of goats were left about with elaborate carelessness to keep him satisfied with his present quarters. The one great anxiety was lest he should die of old age before the date appointed for the memsahib’s shoot. Mothers carrying their babies home through the jungle after the day’s work in the fields hushed their singing lest they might curtail the restful sleep of the venerable herd-robber." It seems so ridiculous, and yet the task proves much trickier than Mrs Packletide anticipates with humorous results. This little book provides an excellent taste of the author (as, no doubt, Penguin intended) and I'll be reading more Saki in the future.

When my 4 year old goddaughter, Kaitlyn, was diagnosed in February 2011 this book was truely helpful. It helped me understand what was in store for us. Although Elena and Kaitlyn's symptoms were not 100% the same, we had an idea of what was to come.

Star Wars books are a dime a dozen and most of them suck. Zahn writes the good ones. I'm reserving this one at the library.

Yes, another Pratchett. I'm on a re-reading kick at the moment. Which is probably a mistake since my stack of books to be read next to my bed is currently in the region of 67. But Pratchett is one of my comfort reads, so I don't feel like apologising to myself too much. Carpe Jugulum is one of my favourites of the series. The writing and the dialogue are as sharp as ever; the characterisation of the witches is spot on; and the humour is just the right mix of wryly witty and really, really bad puns. (The vampires, for instance, live in Don'tgonearthe Castle.) The thing that really made the book for me, as is the case with all of the really good examples of the series, is Pratchett's understanding of human nature, and the pervading morality of the series. It's never something he beats you over the head with, but you come away from the book, not just entertained, but also provoked to think about things like religion and faith and modernity and what makes a person who they are. I always have to re-read the scene where Granny Weatherwax decides about twice, because, yes. Even if I don't always agree with the way Pratchett sees the world, he always delineates his views with such clarity and such precision, that I really love it. The Nac Mac Feegle are also the best thing ever. 'Snafflin' coobeasties!' I have love.

H O T! Rina Devargas gets a call from her brother instructing her to get a locket from his apartment and hide it. His last words to her are to "Trust no one". While at her brother's apartment she is assaulted by the bad guys and saved by Connor McCall. Rina has a history with McCall. After a night of amazing sex he snuck out on her and never contacted her again. Now she has to rely on him to keep her save. McCall left Rina because he likes his sex rough and kinky. He feels that Rina is too nice a person to put up with his darker side. While Rina trusts McCall with her body she is not sure if she can trust him with her brother's evidence against high ranking government officials to assasinate the president. This book was hot, the sex kinky. McCall likes to be in control and there is bondage, light spanking and anal sex. While I suspected who the bad guy's were half way through the book it was still enjoyable. Will definitley look for more books from this author.

Barbara Delinsky writes novels about women and their lives and loves. Although Delinsky’s characters aren’t as rich and famous as Danielle Steel’s tend to be, she may still appeal to you. Although Barbara Delinsky’s characters are less glamorous than Danielle Steel’s, both authors are known for their attention to women’s lives, relationships, and strengths.

I was fooled... I knew this was the same book as "To Have and to Hold" but under a different name for the UK release... silly me.
