I first read and enjoyed this book about 13 years ago, having been a fan of the show, and I enjoyed the book then. Coming back to it now, though, I better appreciated how truly brilliant it was, and how audacious a project. In a lesser writer, this would have degenerated into cheap pulp, or incomprehensible complexity, very fast. But Simon hits just the right notes, putting complex and overlapping stories together in a discernible manner without oversimplifying. He also has knack for capturing the drama in what is, for his subjects, the quotidian. You might find that he goes too far in certain passages describing homicide bureau culture, but the line is subjective and I cannot think of a better work for capturing the daily lives and attitudes of its subjects. And as for drama: I defy anyone not to cringe at the portrayal of Detective Pellegrini's degeneration into obsession and self-recrimination in his determination to solve a child-murder. It's also important to remember how brave this endeavor was at the time. This was before embedded, fly-on-the-wall journalism became popular, and indeed I think the book is probably one of the reasons the genre succeeded. There are some problems along those lines, it being one of the early examples of the genre; Simon, for example, writes entirely in the third person and never acknowledges his own presence. The literary effect is awesome; like in cold blood, only narrated in the present tense. But it also feels a little off; he is after all, ignoring the presence of someone in the room who might be affecting the dynamics, even if that person is just himself. (Evan wright's Generation Kill, something of a successor to Simon's work, shows how a similar book can be done in the first person.) But, I as I said, as a literary device, it works very well overall.

I'm going to call this book the little wonder from now on. Because it is so little, and so wonderful. And on page 52, just below the word shimmering, there is a small thread shaped like a sperm. And that is very appropriate for this book. Maybe other copies have this too. I certainly hope that they do.

Where's the 3 1/2 star button? I really did like it--mostly because I was so happy she didn't just rehash her first Austenland plot. This one is a mystery! Love her cheeky writing, even if some of the plot was a little unrealistic. You make me laugh, Shannon Hale.

4.5 stars. My sister really liked this book, and mentioned it several times, so I finally picked it up from my too large stack of library books and started it. I read it in two sittings within twenty-four hours. So, yeah, I liked it too. :) The voice was different from most YA paranormals, more unique. It actually took a long time for the main character, Jessica, to discover the truth (re: Werewolves exist! Eek!)--it was in the last maybe quarter of the book, so in that aspect it was kind of slow moving, but the story was fast paced and kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. Jessica's penchant for vampire novels was funny, especially when it seemed like everyone around her was reading classics and only classics. Sigh. The ending was rather cliffhangery, and from what I understand the second book in the series is worse. I'm developing a great respect for authors who can end a book in a series with closure, wrapping up the book's storyline, but still leave the reader wanting more.

Some of the information is good, but I didn't particularly enjoy the snobbish, holier-than-thou attitudes of the authors. I think this book would turn omnivores and even vegetarians off to the idea of veganism based on the authors' communication style. The book is just not all that well-written.
