The multiple stories of The Bluest Eye is told from the perspective of different characters within the novel. The main narrator is a child named Claudia who relates the pitiful story of Pecola Breedlove, but the reader also sees the story through the eyes of the characters Pecola Breedlove, Pauline Breedlove, Cholly Breedlove, and the child molester Soaphead Church. After witnessing a fight between her mother and father Pecola’s child-like understanding of the world makes her believe that if she had blue eyes she would have friends and family who love and care for her. She eventually goes insane. I had read this novel about ten years ago, and I didn't like it because I thought the story was just so sad. Now I read it and wonder at Morrison's ability to write of grief and desolation with such depth and at the same time, use words to create such beautiful imagery along side the horror.

Maybe I'm impatient, but it felt like the plot moved incredibly slowly. After 100 pages, I couldn't get into it. It rarely happens that I don't finish a book. I just couldn't do it. The plot that DID happen was so repetitive it was distracting. Yuck.

I read this book because my sister tortured me into it. She swore up and down that I'd fall in love if I gave it a chance, and because she rarely says this and is usually right when she does, I caved. And she was right. I absolutely loved Matt's journey in this book. It's an awesome start to a great series with characters that literally kept me up all night. I'm not a middle grade reader, and I definitely avoid "good vs evil" books, but Anthony Horowitz painted such a vivid picture of the creepy world that Matt was sucked into. But what really made this book for me was Richard Cole. OMG. He was quite possibly my favorite book boyfriend for many, many years after I read this, and writing this review makes me want to reread it all over again. I loved the "big brother" role he took on with Matt, and even though he tried so hard to avoid the craziness that surrounds 'the five', he clearly plays a bigger role in the big picture. I think this series is seriously underrated and deserves some hype.

Almost Vegetarian was one of the first cookbooks I purchased for myself, with the aim of learning how to really cook -- how to create meals that were both delicious and nutritious, and which warmed both the heart and soul. I liked the ethic of this book; the way that Diana Shaw really believes in a life that revolves around the kitchen, and incorporates the image of good living into every recipe. However, I'm writing this having spent the past several hours working over one of her recipes, and I'm underwhelmed. Again. I so rarely open this book because I have yet to have a culinary success using it -- and considering that most of the times I decide to cook, I end up rather pleased with the results, it leads me to think that the book itself is suspect. I'm not sure whether Shaw is simply working at a much more complex level than I am, and therefore omitting crucial steps that a more advanced chef might instinctively include, whether the recipes are just too hard for me, or whether I'm somehow bad at this one type of cooking...but the end result is that this is not a good book for me. She gets stars for excellent writing, an environmentally-friendly emphasis on sustainability, and her extensive knowledge of nutrition, but ultimately falls down on the crucial aspect of a cookbook -- the ability to help the chef create a delicious, sustaining experience.

I read this when it first came out. For as long as I can remember, I've been a fan of Arthurian tales, but other than Marion Zimmer Bradley's masterpiece The Mists of Avalon, they don't really tell much about the women of Camelot. This is nowhere near the scope of Bradley's book, but it was still enjoyable. The Guinevere portrayed here is young, shy, but courageous and determined. In love with two men, she does her best to hold to what is right, while dealing with the pain and shame of not being able to produce an heir for Arthur. Over the years, with moves and whatnot, I'd lost my copies of both this book, along with a few others from the same time. I just managed to replace them, and reading this gave me a wonderful afternoon to slip back into the creation of Camelot and the world of Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot.
