Tora Hamilton is a consultant gynaecologist who has recently moved to Shetland with her husband. Shetland is a group of remote islands North of Scotland. One day she’s digging in the field near her house and finds a body in the peat. Initially assumed to be a centuries-old body, nail polish on the toenails reveal that the woman must be from a more recent time. Tora informs the police, and as she works at the hospital, is involved in the autopsy of the body. However, both her boss and her husband suggest that she forget what has happened and leave the investigation to the police. She accepts this to start with, but becomes suspicious of their motives later on. However, the female police officer in charge, Dana, who initially is quite cool towards Tora, does involve her in the case and together they find out more than they could have ever believed. A good read, a quick read, and a compelling read. Yes, I read this book in two days or so, all 550 pages! I liked Tora, the main character, a lot and found the building up of the working relationship and (later) friendship between Dana, the police offer and Tora believable. I also wanted them to be friends! The story itself is complex, although it starts off simple enough and new elements are added to the story in a well-paced manner. The end result was a little unlikely, I thought. It was a combination of folklore, greed, and serial killing – a bit much in one story. Also, the main character, Tora, managed to survive a number of dangerous situations, and not ending up dead after just one of them was miraculous enough. Still, the story was entertaining and it kept me greedily reading more, so suspend your disbelief somewhat and you’ll have a great thriller!
