This was like the literary equivalent of getting my bi-weekly allergy shots: So much unnecessary bother on my part (for some reason, I felt obligated to see the book through), with very little pay-off to show for my diligence. My one main peeve (aside from the endless notations throughout the book and the plot twist that blind-sided me in a way that I found annoying, rather than shocking or intriguing) was the really awkward dialogue. True, I haven't been a teenager in over a decade, but I would imagine the teens of today (even the precocious, well-off kind) just don't talk this way. It wasn't "Dawson's Creek" awkward, but it certainly seemed to miss the mark.

I tried to read this a couple of years ago, but I couldn't get into it. I'm glad that I tried again, though, because it is a really worthwhile book. I had wanted to include it in a unit that I'm doing on war/conflict (for a class of 13 year olds), and the themes would have worked really well, but ultimately I decided against it. The book is long, a bit too long, and it's easy to lose the narrative thread. Having the character of "Death" narrate the book is an interesting choice, and it worked for me, but I do think it creates a space of detachment between the main characters/action and the reader. Perhaps that is all for the best, considering the grim subject: lots of fear, lots of struggle, lots of deaths in WWII Germany. However, as much as I appreciated the irony of the narrator, I do think it places this book in the upper register of the "young adult" audience. I would give this book 5 stars for originality and the quality of the writing, but only 4 stars for the pleasure that I took in reading it.

This book is pretty dense and took me a while to finish. The narrator, Ebenezer le Page, tells the story of his life on the Channel island of Guernsey through both world wars, and his lost loves and friendships. It's written in Guernsey dialect, which was enjoyable to read, but the absence of a streamlined plot made it slow going. However, the ending tied it all together and I finished the final page with a big smile on my face.

This is a very sweet book. I have read it four times and I still enjoy it every time. I love it. There are about four books in it. In the end they all tie together. It is so good and so sweet. I definitely recommend it to every one of all ages.

I really enjoyed this book. I have never been to Washington so this book was very informative to me. God plays a very big part in our future and history and I highly recommend reading this book.

I found this book absolutely fascinating and loved nearly every moment of it. I learned that over 150-years ago there lived two mini's (a.k.a dwarfs) named General Tom Thumb (his stage name in P.T. Barnum's circus) and his wife, Vinnie who were so famous that Abraham Lincoln was at their wedding, they toured the world (being one of the first people ever to visit Australia and to ride on the new American railroad), and dined with the Queens & Kings of multiple countries. They had more money & fame then they knew what to do with! Their wedding was equivalent to that of King Charles & Princess Diana. Just fascinating to learn about a world I never knew existed. This story is about someone in miniature who was never content staying small or living in a small town. Vinnie is full of life, with big ideas and big dreams of exploring the world and noting her adventures along the way. This book is a historical fiction novel filled with excitement, tragedy, perseverance, sadness and ending with the realization of what her true happiness is and not being afraid anymore to embrace it. It was also fun to "google" Tom Thumb and his wife, Vinnie and find all the pictures and to read a bit more about them. They lived in a time with a society who was so welcoming and yet eager to quench their overwhelming curiosities. Life was raw with new cities popping up everywhere, and new technologies & inventions constantly being introduced to the public, it really gives you a feel for what they experienced during their time on this earth. I loved it and would highly recommend it!
