I used this last week in programs for children as young as 2. The illustrations, combined with the line in big print on each page, made it work beautifully for these smaller kids. They were really fascinated by the spreads on colors, shapes and on the petrified dinosaur egg. This was even better with the older (3-6 year old) crowd. For them, the details in the text were helpful with the discussions each 2 page spread inspired. And the end papers, showing the huge variety of animals that hatched from the eggs were pored over by the group. Highly recommended for groups and for one on one readings with preschoolers and school aged kids.

Not very spooky, but extremely funny.

Only 3 because of the archaeology and Abe. The main chracters were boring. The suspects and possible motives were too common. The story took predictable turns. I'm glad the love scenes weren't too uncomfortable and the interactions were very normal - a good thing.

"TRAPPED INSIDE THE WEB" BY ALAN DALE "OLD COVER" NOW CALLED "TRAPPED INSIDE THE WEB" This book was just freaky. Can you imagine being able to travel by way of your own internet portal to where your physical body is able to meet with someone you've met online? Perhaps one of the worst inventions ever made has caused irreparable damage as a serial killer begins using this ability to stalk females and murder them. It is then up to the people that created the ability as well as others to track this person down and stop his rampage. The only problem is, when a person is murdered or something happens to end their life, their portal dies with them. A really awesome story, one that will definitely catch your imagination and make you ask... what if? I for one would not want to have anything to do with the portals... I think I'll keep my internet just the way it is. -Kitty Bullard / Great Minds Think Aloud Book Club Read more: http://www.greatmindsthinkaloud.probo...

Funny and an engaging story. The characters are entertaining and not what I first expected them to be. Recommend if you like dry humor.

I like true crime. If you know me, you know I really like reading about serial killers and can easily kill 4+ hours on the (sniff sniff basically defunct) Crime Library website. However, this book opens by writing a check that it's ass never cashes. The prologue is a fictionalized recounting of Blanche's preacher father forcing her into prostitution to pay off a debt. This sets the scene for the causality of "she was abused, therefore she killed." But the author never really makes good and never really revisits her past with any depth and blah... it suffered. The most remarkable part of the book was the medically specific descriptions of poisoning that turned my stomach. And the funny looks I got with it on the bus.

On Chisel Beach is the story of a bride and groom on their disastrous wedding night. Florence and Edward believe themselves to be deeply in love with each other, but this is an uncomplicated masking for a very complicated reality. On their wedding night both are virgins. Florence is terrified of physical contact. Edward, whom Florence does not know is a virgin, is worried that he won't be able to contain himself once they move towards consummation. The entire evening goes terribly wrong when Florence attempts to hide her fears and brave through the sexual encounter and Edward's fears are realized in a manner that thoroughly terrifies Florence. After an awkward and hurtful exchange between the two on the beach, Florence leaves and Edward lets her. In his typical fashion, Ian McEwan weaves the pasts of these two characters into the plot through the seamless incorporation of flashbacks. His emphasis on detail is, as always, beautiful and balanced. I felt very uncomfortable through much of the story, yet compelled to see that uncomfortableness through to the very end. Thus, I read the book in less than a day.

My unsubstantiated theory on Banana is that she needs a better translator. Not that she's not great -- she often is -- but I feel like there's a sort of choppiness in her prose sometimes, and sporadic awkward turns of phrase. That's less true in this book than in some of her others, maybe, but it's still there. I do think she's basically in the same class as Murakami, using a similar voice to skate through many of the same themes, like the "this side / the other side" dichotomy, with things and people moving silently and softly between the two, and music and its power, and time and its betrayals, and the loss of self through occultish means, and fog and darkness and loss and aching loneliness.... I feel like Banana should be as ragingly popular as Haruki is, but the fact is that he reads like being submerged in something, mercury maybe, where everything is all liquid and flow; and even though she's great, Banana just doesn't quite have the same consistent immersiveness. About Hardboiled and Hard Luck. It's two novellas, a little tiny bit of book that you can read in a few hours. "Hardboiled" is stunning, a soft slow story about being in love with a dead girl. "Hard Luck," however, sort of lost me a little; it's about a girl whose sister is slowly dying, and it is so, so sad. I had to keep mentally distancing myself to keep from breaking down in devastation.

After loving Carlos Eire's Waiting for Snow in Havana, tonight I start his sequel, Learning to Die in Miami. Eire is an amazing writer.
