It's difficult to put into words why I liked this book. Normally political plots while vying for a throne is hardly something I'd be interested, not to mention read 800+ pages about in an on-going series. I think the main reason I got into the story was the characterization. I didn't feel meh about any characters, they all fell along some spectrum of really hate or really like. I recently picked up the first two books of the Belgarad and the characters in that were so utterly stereotypical. You could predict their actions half a book in advance. With Game of Thrones, the characters definitely surprised me more. Jon and Tyrion showed insight and wisdom when making decisions. Daenerys grew a lot over just the one book and as she grew to know and like the Dothraki people so did I. Martin's characterization of children interested me as well. I feel like often authors make all children in their book either useless brats or unrealistic mini-adults. The kids in this novel definitely showed varied personalities. As I was reading the novel I wasn't sure if I would like it or not. The moment when I realized how much I was enjoying the book was when I found myself feeling such a strong sense of hatred for Joffrey and Cersei and again when I absolutely loved Khal Drogo (especially Vicerys final scene with him). I liked guessing about people's loyalties, wondering what will come from the north and found myself completely admiring those who remained logical and stalwart even when things are at the worst (e.g., Arya, Barristan, Ned, Tyrion, etc.). I could go on and on about my opinion on every single major character and that's how I know I really enjoyed the book. Because I actually have an opinion on every single character. Yes, Martin gets a little kill-happy with his characters (especially the ones I really like) but he has others growing and stepping up as well (and other's falling down, I have a feeling my esteem of Daenerys is going to plummet...). He has strong character development, fluid plots, variety of perspectives. I was very impressed and cannot wait to pick up the next one. The HBO special (which I started watching after finishing this novel) is also incredibly impressive. And I could watch that beginning title sequence alone over and over! The series is so close to the book that you can pretty much read along.
