One hyphenated word: Over-rated! An author has an interesting life and sells books about that life. Big whoop.

A look at the psychology and poetry of boxing. Oates developed an attraction for the sport, as her father took her to matches as a kid.

Awesome book. Which is why almost everyone has read it. Excellent writing, engaging story. My only complaint is about some of the graphically violent scenes. They needed to be in the story, but knowing that didn't make them any easier to read and think about.

Ugh, why do I keep giving Dean Koontz more chances? While early books made up for their lack of depth by being fun and quick to get into, his last several books have been wretched. Listen Dean, I understand you like your dog, but does the world really need half a dozen books about magical Golden Retrievers?

This is a story of the Rankin family (based on a real family and real events in history) and the important role they played in the pre-civil war underground railroad. Their brick house is the first stop on the northern side of the underground railroad just across Kentucky and the Ohio river into Ohio. Slaves from Kentucky would flee to Ohio seeking freedom and safety. The Rankin family helped slaves escape to the north. In this story we meet young Lowry when he is nine years of age. He witnesses his young friend being beaten just because he is a slave. The story follows Lowry through his elementary years and into his adolescent years. He transports slaves from one safe house to another, faces bullies and most of all faces his own fear of speaking out when he needs to. Lowry learns he can take a stand for something he truly believes in, freedom for people regardless of the color of their skin. He overcomes his own fear and insecurity to help others. He learns that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things and that he can make a difference in the lives of many. Ms. Reed has done a wonderful job in writing this story. It will keep you wanting to know what will happen at the end of the story. It is a wonderful living book about a difficult time in history. This is a book I will be keeping on my shelves to use school when we study the underground railroad. It will make an excellent go along book! disclosure: I received a copy of this book from Kregel Publications in exchange for my honest review. No other compensation was recieved.

This book was disappointing. It has a wonderful premise and I had high hopes for it, but the story never really went anywhere. The writing was beautiful at times, and the journal of love notes that gets passed around through each section is very touching. However, not a lot happens and it could've been so much more. Darn.

I read this book on vacation and couldn't put it down. The author's ability to make the plot line believable surprised me. I found myself more interested in Henry than Clare, but it was a fun read overall. In terms of a love story, it's not too cheesy, which I liked.

This book has been staring me down since I got it for Christmas... a year and half ago. (I like books I can put in my purse and it was a big hardcover, if you must know.) I wondered why it was picked as the city-wide read for San Diego, and why it got so many accolades, so I dove into it last week. For about a week I have been finding any moment I could to read read read. One night I found myself up til 2am with it, for which I'll give partial credit to the the book (the other half goes to mango black tea- thank you Susie!) The story is interesting, but unfortunately, I found it got just too tricky at the end. No spoilers, but if the end had come 3/4 way through I would have given it 4 stars. It eked out 3 because of this. At some points I felt the author was trying too hard, and my other qualm was that I never, um, figured out what era it took place in?! There were no chronological hints. As in, at all. First there would be a carriage house, but then there would be a hospital with an emergency room. Confusing. But a fun read, and a page-turner, and a reminder of why I like mystery novels.

Absolutely loved this book. Very intense parts, but Salander is one of my favorite book characters.

hard to get through at points, but still a fascinating look at how a language evolves.
