This is a horrifying story made only worse by the fact that it is all true. I'll leave other reviews to go on in detail about it. I don't even have the consolation that 'well, at least it doesn't happen anymore'. Chattel slavery and abduction are still hideous problems the world over. It's all very grim to think about. Still, the world owes Northrup a debt of gratitude for bring the truth about such an awful system and the abuses it caused.

Some of the "facts" I disagree with, like the wonderfulness of the Pill and the inability of a newborn baby to nurse. (I remember LC crawling towards my breasts as soon as she was born, and I've seen videos of other newborn babies actually latch on without help.) I love, love, love so many of the stories in this book, but especially the story of Conchita and her literally-unconscious protection of her premature twenty-fifth baby with the support of her husband.

This book is able to pull the reader into the lives, troubles, loves and tragedies faced by a fictional family at the dawn of America's entrance into WWII. Dean Hughes is skillful at helping the reader understand the choices faced by that generation, for it is never easy for a devoted Christian to face killing his enemy, even in a war situation.
Told from the point of view of four women this story is full of hardships and triumphs and how true friends are by your side through both.

If you want to become more knowledgeable about the crisis in Darfur, this is definitely the book to read. I enjoyed it and it is a fast read. Don Cheadle and John Prendergast really help you to be informed about what is happening in Darfur and neighboring countries. Also, they offer many recommendations on how we, as Americans can end the genocide.

Good descriptions of Rome but didn't like the story, I didn't finish it. Not at all as good as Mistress of Rome.

My older sister gave this book (and it's companion, Hello Cupcake!) to my little sister for her birthday last year... or two years ago. xD Either way, I really just love paging through these two books thanks to the ingenious ideas that the authors came up with! You think a cupcake is just a muffin with a bit of sugar coating? Think again! There seem to be unlimited ideas as to what you can do with a cupcake. Don't know any? Pick up one of these two books! If only to page through it and end up looking like =O because you can't believe that someone came up with THAT idea! (My favorite? The cupcake garden! Cupcakes with little peas, carrots, planted plants... etc!)

** spoiler alert ** Okko is a ronin in the land of Pajan (similar to feudal Japan). His companions are Noburo (a masked man or demon or creature), and a drunken monk. Together they fight demons. Noburo is attacked at a geisha house while he is being entertained by the lovely Little Carp. Pirates carry her and the other geisha off across the sea, and Little Carp’s brother, Tikku, convinces Okko and company to help him rescue his sister. They have to consult the water spirits in order to track the pirates, and when they do discover their whereabouts, things are not as they seem. Little Carp has been murdered by Pennagolans – demonic spirits who are masquerading as the lord and lady of a high-ranking Pajan family. The lady of the house has taken her body, and she and her husband are using it to produce an heir (Little Carp is already pregnant at the time). The samurai and his companions defeat them and Tikku joins them for training, service, and further adventures (to be continued in the Cycle of Earth). This full color graphic novel is beautifully illustrated – stylistically it’s very Asian (appropriate considering the setting). I wish some of the panels had been larger as it was occasionally difficult to make out what was going on action-wise. Good story, very engaging, with plenty of surprises and gory beheadings. I’m not as well-versed in Japanese mythology as I’d like to be, and I’m wondering if the demons mentioned in this book are part of actual Japanese mythology, analogous to something in that mythology, or created especially for this Pajan. I’d love to read what comes next. This is definitely for adults/a mature audience – there’s lots of violence and some nudity.

This book was amazing. It reads like an actual historical depiction of something that really happened! It tells the story of a war against a sudden worldwide zombie outbreak, from the perspective of people who survived to talk about their experiences. It's told from the perspective of someone compiling anecdotal information from a plethora of different sources, including military combatants, internet ninjas and idiot savants, as well as lots of everyday folk. Creepy and very well done.
