Schiff's history of Cleopatra is well-researched, loaded with historical fact and detail. But Cleopatra never comes to life through these pages. Glad I read it, but at times it was a chore.

This historical mystery has all of the elements I love; It is set in the latter years of the 18th century. It features two free-thinking, unconventional characters that take it upon themselves to solve a series of murders, & in doing, so, become friends. Unlike other novels in this genre, the two main characters are older than usual, and not romantically involved. The male character is in his 50's and is an antisocial anatomist; the female, a naval officer's wife and mother of two, managing her country estate. The author gives us hints of the revolutionary fervor sweeping Europe at the time, as a interesting backdrop. The secondary characters, villagers & local nobility, as well as London riff-raff, add color & depth to the story. Interwoven throughout is the story of how a carefully plotted blackmailing begins.

A tall tale about a librarian who got a whole town to read. Lil has loved books since she was a baby, and she has become strong from carrying all those books home from the library. It seems logical that she would become a librarian. However, no one in her town reads - they all watch TV. A power blackout and a visit from a tough motorcycle gang help Lil to show people the joy of reading. I was not crazy about the book or the illustrations. Television and books can coexist - it shouldn't be either/or. And the people's faces were a bit strange.

Well, let's see. I finished the darned thing. 700 pages or something freaking long like that, and still, when I got to the end I was like, that's it? THAT's where you're ending it? Because it seemed like Mr. Faber stopped the story in medias res. But it was interesting and he's an excellent storyteller. Just left me wanting more.
