Dead women, a serial killer with issues, power struggles with Roarke, more of the same for Lieutenant Dallas. I didn't predict the killer as early as I did in the first book, which made this book a more gripping read. I hope the misogynist serial killer isn't going to be a recurring theme in the rest of the books because it's starting to get formulaic.

I received an Advanced Reader of this book, and was blown away. It was the first (and so far, only) book by Roth that I'd read, and his style was easy and impressive. An absolute recommend.

I wanted to read this book because I had read several Russian novels and because I had seen the movie. I liked the book more than the movie, especially the ending. The middle portion of the book, detailing the Dr.'s adventures after being conscripted, was a bit tough going. What isn't clear to me, from either the movie or from the book, is who Tonia is at the beginning of the movie and at the end of the book. She is the daughter of Yuri and Lara? It wasn't clear at all to me from the book that Yuri and Lara were lovers. In the movie at least they kissed. Also I thought about what makes a Byronic hero and it seems to me Yuri fits that pattern.

** spoiler alert ** Spoilers! Yay, fancy Kit gets to have her own way! She gets to be independent! Boo (and yay, because I'm a hopeless romantic), all the young girls marry who they're "supposed" to. Yay, Puritanism is mocked but not completely. Speare actually manages to show a little bit of the cultures' nuances. I liked this book at 27. I think I would have adored it at 9 or 10.
