Another "controlled society" book. . . . it's an enjoyable series, somewhat predictable. I was a little bothered by how naive Cassia is in this book. Her one goal is to reach Ky and she seems to do that without too much difficulty. But, it seems to me like "the rising" controls there group of people almost as much as "the society" controls the vast population. I really hope the author makes some bold moves in the last book and doesn't disappoint.

Okay, this book was fun. There is no other description for it. I love anything paranormal. I’m not picky. I’ll take werewolves, vampires, you name it. There’s just something about the mystery and mythology of these characters that makes me want to know more. Soulless had all that and more. There were vampires, werewolves, ghosts and Alexia who was born without a soul. There was also just enough romance, mystery and comedy to keep everyone happy. I will admit that in the beginning I wasn’t sure if I could keep up. Gail has a tendency to jump from one point of view right into another without a break. It was a little distracting at first, but once I started getting into the story I wouldn’t have cared if she jumped into 3 points of view in one paragraph. I just couldn’t get enough of Alexia and the rest of the cast of characters. There aren’t many books that make me laugh out loud, but Soulless was one of them. The romance between Alexia and Lord Macoon was simply adorable and unexpected from both characters point of view. Literally, everyone in the book saw it coming except for them, I’m not giving anything away. :) I will definitely be reading the rest of this series in the near future. If you want a paranormal story with a touch of witty humor this series is perfect. I can’t wait to see where Gail takes Alexia in the next installment.

This was a book group selection. The story takes place in the early 20th century in a small Canadian town. Valancy Stirling is 29 years old and is considered an old maid. She is ridiculed by her family, made fun of and is the butt of the family's jokes. She has no real friends. Valancy feels she has never really lived and that she has always done what her family wants her to do. Her mother uses emotional blackmail to control her. A letter from Dr. Trent changes her life. She breaks out of the family mold in order to really live life and for once to enjoy it. She marries the local ne'er-do-well, Barney Snaith, much to the shock of her family. He teaches her to experience the beauty of the world around her, something she had only read about. Her imaginary blue castle that helped her escape her dull and unhappy life becomes a real tangible place at Barney's little shack in the woods. This was a quick read. On the whole I enjoyed reading it, although I almost set it aside because I was so aggravated with the way Valancy let her family treat her. But, during that era, what choice did she have? I'm glad I stuck with it. It was entertaining, a bit naive and predictable in some areas.

I really enjoyed Charles and Anna's story. Man there was so much information in this book; myths and legends about witches, it was almost overwhelming. But it worked and I got through it all. Highly recommend this series.
