The movie is known by the title "Wedding Date" (Debra Messing, Dermot Mulroney)...and it's really bad. The book is SO much better, and a fun read.

I recommend this for anyone in their 20s who is questioning what it is this "growing up" thing is supposed to be all about. Oh wait...isn't that all of us?

I only listened to this book on tape, and I didn't like the reader as much.

I just kinda hate Bella. Probally never had to change a diaper, with her perfect baby and her perfect house and her perfect husband. Girl needs a reality check.

I enjoyed this book. I think Dr. Diamond paints an entirely plausible picture of human prehistory. His hypotheses are coherent and well-reasoned. He provides some very interesting correlations between aspects of human evolution and the rise of dominant societies / cultures; namely that four factors are responsible for all historical developments: 1) availability of potential crops and domestic animals, 2) the orientation of continental axis to facilitate the spread of agriculture, 3) transfer of knowledge between continents, and 4) population size. The main reason I gave this book 3 stars instead of 4 or even 5, was: 1) Diamond did not provide the reader access to the science / empirical evidence behind many aspects of his hypotheses. Incredibly, there were no footnotes or citations - just a lengthy laundry list of "Further Reading" 2) When explaining some aspects of his hypotheses, Diamond tends to repeat some of the same information over and over - his writing style isn't bad, but I felt that some of the chapters could have been trimmed down, to avoid repetitiveness. Despite this, I thought that it was a very well-written and comprehensive book - I would certainly recommend it to anyone interested in a well-thought, and reasoned account of human societal evolution.

intriguing premise and it delivers. more than that, the book is beautifully written. as a parent, it touched me. there really are some things (bad, awful, things) that we can't always control. but the book helps us see that it is possible to move on from grieving but never stop loving the one we lost. (and that there can be justice in this world, or the next!)

An English widow decides to open up a bookshop in her small town. That was all I knew of this book (well, and that my mom has a dozen of Fitzgerald's slim paperbacks strewn around her house) and that was what made me pick it up. So my reaction here is kind of a case of thwarted expectations: I was expecting something much more light and comic and—okay, I don't want to say life-affirming, because my vanity wants me to think I am not the sort of person who ever desires to read anything that could be described as "life-affirming" or "uplifting." But yeah: I wanted to read something that made me go, "Books and reading FTW!" This is not that book. Really, it's a tiny, tightly-written tragedy, a story about how people can be really, truly awful to one another, with all the good people getting punished and bad people rewarded. It's very well-written and perfectly, plainly presented, and damn, does it hurt. I finished it just after midnight and went to bed whimpering.
