Somebody recently told me, to my horror, that The Kite Runner is becoming required reading in most schools. Fuck me. Hey, my fellow American educators? How's about requiring something USEFUL to teach American kids about what happens when an extremist, fundamentalist regime takes over? I mean, it's just as fictional as The Crap Runner, I mean, Kite Runner, but it's actually educational and useful, and comes from an author who actually has a brain larger than that of a goldfish. It's got the same elements as the Kite Runner, you know, stonings, public executions, rape, and the oppression of women and minorities. But guess what? This novel is actually written with believable characters, lack of cliches, and a frighteningly realistic plot. Easily one of the best books I've ever read.

The History of Love, a novel within an novel, champions the idea of enduring love and connection. Three storylines—a retired locksmith in New York, a teenager named after the protagonist of the title novel, and a Polish-Chilean writer— are slowly woven together, entreating the reader to discover the connection between them. Nicole Krauss does an admirable job keeping those voices distinct and playing with inventive forms (for example, the teenager's chapters are formatted with numbered headlines). However, I didn't find one of the major characters sympathetic and didn't care for the short sentence fragments that dot his chapters. Although the connection is realized in the end, it seemed anticlimactic as the other interesting characters that Krauss has created are swept aside for the moment of the All-Important-Connection. The story collapsed into being about the life of that one character. Overall, it was an interesting read.

Really makes you think about the word "perfect" and how most women are trying to be that very thing. This is another one of Anna Quindlen`s books that changed the way I make decisions and view myself. An amazing read -- I wish all my girl friends could read it!

Just waatched the movie now for the book! Now that I have finished the book, a little disappointed. I enjoyed the movie much better. Not sure if I will even bother picking up the next book.

What wonderful, loopy, discursive, digressive, comic - and addictive - sentences!

Well written, but Margaret was not someone I could sympathize with.
Really beautifully written and quite a page turner! Her portrayal of a 90 year old man felt so real to me, perhaps because my 81 year old father acted exactly the same way! Anyway, I highly enjoyed it and don't know why I waited so long to read it.

Read to me, appropriately, by my father as a child. Riveting, tender, heartbreaking/warming. Dahl is simultaneously at his most human and adventurous.

This book was sort of confusing... But I liked it, it was really good. About the future and things that could happen wit such advanced technology. I got it to read after the taks test x3
