It's very fun. Because it was like adventurous, and also like mysterious. I especially liked the ending part :) I highly recommend this to everyone. It's very fun to read, and the book just makes your eyes read through the lines non-stop.

This book manages to be charming and delightful even though most of the subject matter is very serious. The story is completely relayed through letters. It involves the people who live on the island of Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands off the coast of England, and it's occupation by the Germans during World War II. The main characters begin a letter writing relationship with an author in London right after the war. They describe the creation of their Literary Society and some of the hardships and horrors those living under the occupation suffered. This unique style of writing is very successful in creating memorable characters who can be both hilarious and serious. It is a delightful book that shows how strong the human spirit can be even under the most difficult circumstances.

This short story is amusing. I don't know that it's worth the $.99 price tag attached to it at Barnes and Noble (it's only 9 pages, not all of those are text, and not a whole lot is accomplished save the punch line), having already bought it I'm not sorry I read it. Obviously, this is a touching story. Tragic and heart renching as you see the pain experienced by this family, but I did not like the writing nor consider it to be a well written book - I think it would have been better left as a blog.

A very readable story of a Bangkok-based (I think?) reporter going through Myanmar, with a lot of background history on that country and George Orwell's works and life thrown in. Very interesting novel, and one I was glad to have read a couple months prior to traveling through Myanmar myself.

I absolutely did not want to put this book down. It had been a while since I read the first Alex Craft story, Grave Witch, and I was afraid that I'd have a difficult time getting back into her world and story--shouldn't have been concerned. Kalayna Price weaves Alex Craft's worlds (yes, plural) and her stories with vivid imagery and a background rich in folklore and faerie. This story gives us some answers about Alex's family, but opens up a whole enough questions to hint at many more (I hope!) stories to come.

This book of short stories is extremely well crafted. Each story is united by the theme of evolution/myths/bible theories/scientific theories, and it is def my favorite of Calvino's thus far. The first story about the moon is the best, and is a must read if anyone was to choose just one story from the book.

3.5 stars http://threedollarbillreviews.com/201... Despite his name, Jamie Bliss has had a horribly cruel start to his life. Abandoned by his parents, he ended up in foster care where his foster father repeatedly sexually abused him. Not knowing any better, he later fell into a string of relationships with men who are physically abusive or use him to satisfy their own needs, giving nothing in return. He has no concept of what love is or how a truly giving relationship works. Love Quest is a gritty story about a young man's journey to discovering himself and learning what it means to love and be loved. It begins with disturbing and graphic details of what Jamie is forced to endure at a very young age. Those details are heartbreaking and it's easy to see the scars left on Jamie as a result. It's the second half of the story that really shines, as Jamie fights with everything in his being to reinvent himself, to overcome what he's been through, to prove he is better than the whore he's been treated as all his life. Meeting Evan and Frederick marks the beginning of his retaking control over his own life, and the introduction to Jack. The relationship between Jamie and Jack isn’t easy, and they encounter a few stumbling blocks along the way, but I enjoyed watching them get to know one another and try to overcome Jamie's past. On the surface, the story may not appear to be a romance. However, if you look closely, it's easy to see that this story at its core has an epic element, a quest for real love and caring. Jamie, in the role of the young knight, suffers greatly and has obstacles to overcome, but at the end of his journey is both his prince, and more importantly, himself. It takes some time to really become entrenched in the story, and much of this for me was based on the choice of first-person present. The story is very much told from inside Jamie's head, with additional commentary from his own internal thoughts. It's a fitting choice considering the path the story takes, but as an uncommon choice it does take a bit to embrace. There were a few times where the story went into a bit more detail than was really needed or it felt like a bit of a stretch for Jamie to know the knowledge being shared. Luckily this only happened a few times and wasn't too distracting. This is not a flowery story in any way, and the sex scenes, whether erotic or tales of Jamie being abused, don't mince words and go straight for the gut. My guess is that some readers might have trouble with these descriptions, but the key is that it's raw and real. The underlying beauty is that as Jamie's understanding of himself changes, so does the language and approach of the sex scenes. Overall this is a well-written story with a gradual arc that follows Jamie's story as he rediscovers himself and his capacity to love. If you enjoy stories that are on the rough and real side, but still have an element of romance involved, you will likely enjoy this read as I did.

Like most of Mailer's work, this was exhaustively researched. There isn't a single conjecture of biography in the book that does not point back to accepted history. I found the central device of the novel (that it's narrated by a devil) intriguing. Mailer goes about describing in great detail how difficult it is to actually make a monster. By no means does he ever seek to excuse Hitler of his culpability in his actions. Rather, the point seems to be that it's as difficult to create monsters as it is saints, if not more so. Many readers and critics have been troubled by the frequently-scatalogical tone of the book. I'm not sure what they were looking for here. It's a novel about a devil shaping the mind of young Adolf Hitler. Flowers and moonbeams would seem decidedly out of place.
