Hard to tell how much I liked this one — I can see it going from 3 to 4.5, but it ends somewhat abruptly. That isn't a complaint, though — McKillip warns the reader up front that this is the first of a series and the reader shouldn't expect a comfy ending. So the rating and full review will have to wait. I will say that I love McKillip's style — lyrical and thoughtful, with her world-building quietly tucked into the interstices of the story, not laboriously explained. I'd previously read her Alphabet of Thorn and gave it five stars, although I never got around to writing a review. But that was two and a half years ago, and the memory of her writing has always been calling me back to read more, much like Guy Gavriel Kay. I can see how many folks might grow bored with her quiet and slow style, but it works for me.

Over rated but decent

This book started out promising. It seemed like it was going to be the kind of quirky, funny, witty book that I expected after "Lamb". Not so. Big disappointment. The worst part was that it remained semi-amusing and relatively promising most of the way through, but just fizzled out very unsatisfyingly at the end.

Great book. Reminded me in many ways of The Kite Runner, even though it was written before that book. Set in India with characters you can really care about.

This book took me a really long time to get into. The first part, to me, was confusing and way too much info at once. However, because I was reading it for my book club, I kept on, and it got much better. I am so glad that I finished it because I really feel that I learned a lot from it. So much discussion about Iranian culture - it was really eye opening. In addition, it helped me to look at literature just a little bit differently when anazlying it. All in all, definitely worth reading. The best book ever? Definitely not, but get through the first section, and you'll really enjoy the rest!

Harriet's dysfunctional family causes her to crash into another dysfunctional family. Some powerful set pieces, but I lost interest in the plot.

So... happy surprise of all happy surprises... Tim Curry (Clue, Rocker Horror Picture Show, etc - love him) was the narrator of this audiobook! So that was wonderful and obviously he did a great job, but this book would have been great even with a less distinguished narrator. This is one of those books where they don't really do all that much world building, they just sorta throw you in and explain things along the way. For the most part I appreciate that, although there were a few things that took me a while to figure out. However, as can be common with audiobooks (both good and bad), I tend to multi-task. So I did occasionally let my attention slip while listening and so some of that confusion may be my fault rather than the books. Back to the actual book... this is an interesting an unique story where the dead can occasionally roam free, and require an Abhorsen (a sort of specialized necromancer via their bloodline) to keep them in line. Sabriel gets thrown into this world somewhat abruptly and encounters a snarkily talking cat, a boy trapped as a ships figure-head, crazy magical flying contraptions, and an evil creature out to get her! What will she do?! Well you'll have to read to find out, but I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's not the fastest paced book, but there isn't much down-time either and I definitely got invested in the main characters and their plight. It was a good non-cliffhanger ending so I'm very interested to see where the next one will go.

I am a biased fan of his life's works, and would recommend everything he as written. Terrible and uninformative review...Ah well.

An inside baseball look into how history is done, with Nelson eventually making the speculative conclusion that the real life John Henry was a short, 19 year old from New Jersey unfairly convicted by Virginia's post-Civil War racist legal system. This is all exceedingly interesting, at least until Nelson meanders for nearly half the book about the evolution of the John Henry legend in the 20th Century, which amounts to nothing more than a boring survey of history.
