I read this in 5th grade and I'll explore it again. It's pretty sad and i was a bit traumatized by it back then. There were so many great reviews about it, I'll revisit it again.

Oh, hello there Vlad Tepes! It's been a long time since you made an appearance as a vampire in one of my books! And I like this version of you, the Vlad Tepes I grew up studying about would be proud!:D (Btw, we don't call it Vallachia nowadays!) So hey, how should we rate this book? Looks like the author really did her homework! LMAO Yeah, I just a conversation with a fictional character but I couldn't stop myself, this is too hilarious! Anyway, pretty amazing book! I haven't read anything by Gena Showalter before, but I really like her style. I love the world, the characters, their relationships, the action, the mystery, the diversity ... Everything is so well balanced! I like that all her characters are well developed and they all have their own strong personality and have an important role in the story. They are easy to relate to and to care about! I love Aden and Riley! *swoon* Ok, I'm settling for a 5 stars review - you can thank to the narrator of the audiobook, she's awesome!

3.5 18-year-old Karou is not your typical teenage girl. First of all, she's an art student living in Prague. Second of all, she has blue hair and tattoos. Finally, she was raised in a magical portal by Brimstone, a half-human/half-animal being who trades wishes in exchange for human teeth. She has spent most of her life running dangerous errands for him, traveling to the ends of the earth to bring back bags of teeth, but when burned handprints begin showing up on the doors she uses, it's the first sign that the life she has known is about to come to a end. As she is drawn into an age-old war between seraphim and chimera, she tries to find out who she really is and what her place in the world is meant to be. I used this book in a booktalk to illustrate how hard it can be to draw a line between paranormal romance and fantasy, and I think that very issue is why I didn't love it. I got sucked in by the fantasy aspect only to run smack into 50 pages of overwritten mooning from Karou and Akiva. I actually set the book aside in the midst of that and had a hard time picking it back up. I'm glad I did though, because once Taylor put down her thesaurus and stopped describing Akiva's gorgeousness, the story switched back into fantasy mode and ended up being pretty good. Taylor is a showy writer, but as long as the plot is moving along, it works. It's a little hard to empathize with the beautiful, talented, exotic, wish-rich, wisecracking Karou, but she at least she's a strong female character, unlike many other paranormal romancees. On an unrelated note, I wouldn't recommend listening to the audiobook on this one - the reader's "Czech" accent sounds suspiciously Irish, and the flowery prose teeters on the brink of ridiculousness when spoken out loud. Good for paranormal fans who want something different, fantasy fans who want a focus on romance, and girls who want a heroine who actually does stuff.

A very anecdotal and flowery writer, but the subject is great and the pacing keeps me interested. Half the book is a narrative style of Portland history based very loosely around the formation of streets in relation to developments, government, and other things. The other half is an encyclopedic listing of all the streets in Portland and the reason for their naming. Fun, right?

A simplified, mass-market version of Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum." Eco did it better, but Brown's book is more readable and requires much less in-depth knowledge of A) the western mystery tradition and B) the Catholic church. And Opus Dei is scary, yes, but not THAT scary.

I own other books by Ms. Reynolds and found this one my least favorite one. I did not recognize the "passion" that I expected to find in the book, and I am not speaking of the sexual tension normally seen in Ms. Reynolds's writing. I am speaking of her author's voice. It wasn't there in this one. It was almost as if an editor had stolen all her words and replaced them with his own.

Wicked was a difficult read for me because I had many things going on in my life at the time I read it, including reading three other books at the same time. This book was an interesting take on the Land of Oz and I enjoyed the more intimate look at Elphaba before she became a witch. Who knew there was so much chaos going on behind the scenes in The Land of Oz. In a way, it reminded me a little bit of our world today.
