Title translated: The Temple of wind chimes When a citizen of his country is taken into custody by the chinese police because of suspected murder a member of the embassy comes to prison for help. Nick – the prisoner – tells him his incredible story: he had come through Nepal and Tibet to China fo find the mountains of Huang Shan where the "Door to Paradise" is reportedly to be found. On his way along a river he got lost and was rescued by an old hermit. He followed him to his hut inside an old burnt down temple where Chang, the old man, told him about the "Eight Immortals" who were said to live in this hidden valley. When it started to rain Nick decided to stay with Chang till the weather would get better but it only got worse and they were cut off from the world around. Chang started to tell him about his three past lifes he was able to remember. But when the old man suddenly died because of his weak condition and desaster striked in form of a mudslide Nick barely escaped with his life.. This is an interesting book about buddhistic philosophy of life interwoven into the life of the adventurer Nick. We learn about Nick´s past and the reasons why he came to China to find this valley and how the conversations with the old hermit tells him much about consequences decisions and deeds done in a past life have on his present life and furthermore on his future lifes. Chang even helps him to take a look into some of his future lifes what shakes Nick to the core and makes him think about his outlook on life and nature. It´s a very profound novel and made me also think about truth and consequences and what really counts in life..

** spoiler alert ** This book was so sad !!!! First a school shooting, and then at the end Jennifer dies. I read this book Christmas morning and I was crying my eyes out !!! But even for all of its sadness, it is one of the best books that Dee Henderson has ever written.

The beginning is great. The middle is boring. Once you get to page 180ish, it gets good again.

This is the best book I've read all year. It is one of the best non-fiction books I've read ever, with compelling characters, a riveting storyline, and absolutely enchanting science. It's obvious that Preston fell in love with the redwoods, and you will, too. Key Quote: "I don't know how I would make it through college without D & D and tree climbing."

I liked this one but it is definitely my least favorite Picoult book. Didn't like all the comic book add-ons (not a fan of any comic/fantasy genre), which seemed unnecessary but it was certainly bearable. Intersting story, other than that!

I read it while back packing through Alaska... the perfect traveling companion, as I enjoyed reading about places I visited.

I'm pleasantly surprised at liking this book after reading so many negative reviews. I'd recommend it to my less squeamish friends specifically because of the m/m S&M scenes. That aside, I felt the story was quite entertaining and I finished it in a day. 4/5 stars for a great read. The 5th would've come if the heroine would've given herself over to her own personal demon, ;)

A fun and quick read! Cammie is like a mix between Mia Thermopolis and Sydney Bristow - part awkward girl, part super spy. My only criticism would be that the ending felt a little sudden. The storyline wasn't really wrapped up, just sort of cut off. I guess that is to be expected when a book is part of a series, but I would like a little more resolution. If the goal is to make me want to go out and read the next one, they have succeeded! If only I didn't have to wait until June for it to come out. :) Also, I'm still getting used to reading on my Kindle. The hardest transition is not really having a good sense of how far along I am in the book, and how close to the end I am. There is a percentage marker running along the bottom, but it's not quite the same as seeing your progress physically. This is probably why I was so surprised when the book was suddenly done.

If you can get past the archaic writing style, look up quite a few antiquated words, accept the odd way the book is narrated, and keep yourself straight with multiple characters sharing the same name, you might find it hard to put this book down until you are finished with it. With Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë wrote a very disturbing, very suspenseful book, about a man who is very hard to like or even feel very sorry for. Yet somehow the book is very satisfying, even though there are a few questions left unanswered at the end. Yes, you can probably write off some of the more powerful sections of the book as nothing more than melodrama, yet there is truth in those passages, truth that resounds despite the Victorian language and despite the melodrama. It's not a book to take up lightly, but it's one that I'm really glad to have read.

Liked this, but it didn't work as well for me as Graceling.
