Heavily influenced by Shinto/Buddhist traditions, Musashi (though I am not certain whether he is himself a participant of any Eastern Religion) the famed swordsman was a reputed loner, living a life of disciplined solitude. If you want to live in the woods away from all civilisation and hone your trusty sword, please read it and apply it to your heart's content. If you want to practice competitive martial arts the 'Eastern way', this book is a helpful contribution. If you want to live life to the fullest......... Ignore it completely.

OK. I'm mixed about this book. I had a few people ask me as I was reading it if I liked it. I had to respond "yes" and "no." I had a hard time getting into the story, but I wanted to keep reading because the writing is beautiful. The story did pick up and there were parts I connected with, but the characters were not very sympathetic and I never really felt the love story between Florentino and Fermina. A particularly disturbing part in the book is Florentino's sexual relationship with a 14 year old when he is in his 70s. Why was that even put in the book? Most of the time I just wanted Florentino to get over it, or rather get over Fermina, and get on with his life -- he could have had real love with Leona, but he let that pass by because of his obsession with Fermina. When I finished the book, I mostly felt relief that it was over!

This is such a fun book to read. The students love that the book builds in stages. They also love trying to guess why she swallowed that item, and what it will all turn out to be. I did a read aloud with my kindergarten class and they had so much fun trying to guess what was next. And they remember what stage was before and could repeat the stages. It was like a fun game to them.
