Reading Mali's stuff doesn't compare to hearing him recite it. With a penchant for rhythm and acting, he's one of those people that comes across as condescending and patronizing and most importantly... right on the money. He's got the swagger that comes from fighting the good fight. Kind of like the Half Nelson of the poetry world.

** spoiler alert ** I first read The Belgariad when I was 10, and at the time I thought the books were great. I reread the series recently, and was less impressed. Partly this is because I've grown very tired of prophecy as a story device. That certainly bodes unwell for a book called Pawn of Prophecy. Still, even ignoring the prophecy issue, I found the series difficult to get through a second time. One of the worst problems was that the vast majority of the characters have the same personality, and pretty much all of them have the same sense of humor. They don't really feel like individuals, just slight variations on the same character, but from different places. One of the frequently-used excuses for why the extremely powerful characters don't use their amazing powers to aid more with their quest is that it will attract the attention of their enemies. This often left me with the question, "so what?" While a valid excuse in a few situations, more often than not it seemed like a cheap way of allowing story elements to be obstacles for the characters that really shouldn't have been. Still, at least it was better than The Mallorean, which I also reread.

This book was a good short read but I probably won't read it again. A very sweet story.

The "If All Rochester Read....." selection for 2009. This is a lovely story of a young boy growing up in the Depression era, in a small town in North Carolina. Jim is being raised by his mother and his uncles, and the story reflects the deep love amongst them all. I liked the book for several reasons, including, the notion that cross-cultural issues arise between the closest neighbors, such as the "hill people" and the "town people", and that although divorce may not have been common at that time, but there were still alternative family structures. I guess the story ends up feeling timeless. I look forward to reading this book with grandchildren someday.

I received an advance copy of Trapped through GoodReads.com’s FirstReads giveaway program. Interesting premise, but fell short of my expectations. If you tell me that a book involves kids trapped together in a high school during a blizzard, the plot that comes to my mind is a far more twisted version of Lord of the Flies (and that book was twisted enough). Perhaps it was my expectations that ruined my enjoyment of this book, but what I got with Trapped was nowhere near the power and terror of Lord of the Flies and in the end I was disappointed with what I had read. Overall, once you get past the one-dimensional characters and constant pop culture references, this book is a quick, somewhat enjoyable read that is tainted by a deus ex macina ending that will leave you with a bad taste in your mouth.
Genuinely charming historical fiction with a spunky girl protagonist and quirky small town surroundings. I liked it a lot. But I wouldn't have given it the Newbery over One Crazy Summer, Out of My Mind or many of the other remarkably good middle grade titles out this past year.
