I didn't review this first time around when I read it a couple of years ago and I have decided to take my time and read the whole of the series again over this year to tide me over until the long awaited Lover at Last, released next March (2013). This time around I will be reviewing them all properly. I couldn't remember quite what this was like but I seem to remember thinking that although it was really good and the beginning of my love affair with the BDB series, I didn't enjoy it as much as the next couple in the series. Starting off, it seems to be well-written and pretty fast-paced, even though we have to be introduced to loads of characters initially and the story needs to be set up. However, I did think it was a bit stupid the way that Wrath first approached Beth. Why didn't he just introduce himself to her like a normal person would initially?! I also don't really get why Beth would (view spoiler)

I started this book not really knowing what it was about. It ended up being a pretty personal story to me & it was one of those books that forced me to take a look at my own life & situations. I couldn't put it down until the very end. I definitely recommend.

This was a raw, raw read. Sophie's story is a gruelling exploration into how a person's pain can manifest in many ways. Sophie's been neglected and abandoned her entire life and it has left her perspective permanently skewed. Her way of dealing with the pain - cutting. Bates details her protagonist's dovetail with clarity and subtlety. She succeeded in making Sophie's choices understandable but there were times where I wanted to slap some sense into the girl. Her roommates are understanding to the utmost point, I am not sure how anyone could be with the mood swings, depression and the shower scene. Yet it's still grounded in truth. Having a crush on someone completely unattainable, the need to be loved and hope are all universal. However, this story shows how these universal truths can be warped when a person's been robbed of the simple things many of us take for granted - unconditional love, stability and comfort. It would be easy to make Sophie the cliched "crazy" and while she does have her issues, she possessed great empathy, understanding and insight in other's lives. It's sad to see all that stripped away as her obsession sets in. Her single mindedness is incredulous at times, polarising at others and yet we understand where she's coming from. Unfortunately cutting is becoming more prevalent in society, or maybe we're just all more aware of it. This book takes you into the murky reasoning for self-harm and in Sophie's case it's all about the emotional release. The relief. I think what I liked the most was there was a distinct lack of a pretty red bow tying everything together. Life isn't divided into chapters that can be nicely separated from one another and this book doesn't resolve everything either. Threads were left hanging and that really appealed to me, it added to the reality of this story - Sophie's story. Crossing the Line was written with great care by Di Bates and I highly recommend it.

this book really moved me. the lack of words and beautiful simplistic pictures adds a sense of universality to the story.

The writing was fine, but I could not get into these characters. I sloughed on, but it got increasingly depressing. By the time I reached the double cancer cases I knew it was over for me, so with less than a third of the book to go I jumped ship. I simply didn't care enough to suffer that much.

Really enjoyed this one. Granted, it did take a while to get into but once there it was a marvellous read. All the characters are equally engaging and there is not one where you think "oh no, not you again" and skim read for a couple of pages... Very gripping and moving with an important message - life your life to the full as the world will not stop and wait for you to catch up later.

really good book. i love the movie too. (Warning!!! movie spoiler ahead) the main contrast between the two is although the book alludes to decker being an android in the middle, ultimately you are convinced he is not. However, in the movie decker was a fucking andriod.
