An interesting and troublesome book for me. Arbus's development as a photographer was more gripping than the stories of her career. Her family retains the rights to her work and, according to author Bosworth, refused to grant permission to reproduce any of her photographs; the book suffers for it. Additionally, some research into depression might not be amiss for a biography of someone who committed suicide. If Bosworth did any such research, it doesn't come through. Perhaps she didn't want her work to be seen through that particular lens, but the result is a book more insightful into its own author and the thrall with which she beheld her subject than into Arbus herself.

This was my first read by Antonia Fraser and having read quite a bit of Tudor non-fiction, I was quite looking forward to this one. And it certainly didn't disappoint! What I liked most about this book was the somewhat unique insights it took at times, when looking at these six extraordinary women. It went far beyond the well know 'divorced, beheaded, died....' saga that everyone knows, and gave detailed background on the women themselves, rather than facts based only on the consequences of their marriage to Henry VIII. It felt like they came into their own, independent of their husband who has obviouly overshadowed them throughout history - and it showed that each woman in her own way had a profound influence on English history which can be seen even now (for example, Anne Boleyn and the English church's break with Rome). Another great thing about this book is that it gave a lot more insight into Henry's later wives, which can sometimes be missed by other historians who focus on Katherine, Anne and the English reformation. When Fraser writes about Anne of Cleves, and her life not only during Henry's lifetime but beyond, it's a refreshing narrative that few have seen before. Overall, a fantastic read, I would highly recommend this as well as other Antonia Fraser books - given her riveting writing style, and somewhat alternative viewpoints much written-about subject matter.

Really really disturbing! I ended up trying to understand my own feeling! Why can't I blame Sheryln and Brendan for what they have done to their daughter??! It also makes me think again whether I have treated my kids properly. But this is a book parents have to read in my opinion!!

This book is a high-school Engligh teacher's nightmare. Proulx uses sentence fragments like nobody's business. Subordinate clauses abound, tied to subordinate clauses that have no independent clause to carry them along. I see it. I know it. And I love it. The style fits the landscape, however. Not that Biddo is the saltiest of Maine towns, but the clipped speech of New England -- and obviously Newfoundland -- was still a part of my childhood. The fragments mirror those patterns. The book is dark, deep, and closed-off. The characters slowly reveal themselves and are disinclined to share emotions but love a good, gossipy story. They drink a little too much tea for my American palate, but other than that, I could live with these people. Well, if I ever went home again. As Proulx says, "...but what was the cure for homesickness? Everybody that went away suffered a broken heart. 'I'm coming back someday,' they all wrote. But never did. The old life was too small to fit anymore."

Not sure how I exactly feel about the ending of this series. I liked it, but there were some aspects of it that I just never got into, nor did I understand the significance of it. I want to think there were just too many characters and dragon clans, that I just couldn't keep straight. I've enjoyed opening up and reading about a world with dragons and I loved Gabriel and May, but I felt that after Playing with Fire, the their relationship took a backseat in books 2 & 3. For the most part, this book follows May solo as she tries to piece back the Shard heart. Her and Gabriel are hardly together and when they are, they aren't alone. The characters also got on my nerves in this book. I was never a huge fan of Cyrene to begin with, but she really did me in while reading this book about her relationship with Kostya. Drake also got on my nerves with his overbearing bossiness with Aisling the closer she got to due date, when it passed, as she was in labor,and after the babies were born. Ending with more questions to be answered in the next series, to me, wasn't the way to end it. Gabriel and May's story has more to tell.

I've never actually read Jane Eyre before - seen the movies - it's very readable; references to beliefs commonly held in the day like physiognomy (you can just tell those peasant girls are going to be thick by looking at their faces); and the deep, and sometimes protracted, discussions of christian dogma in the middle of what is at heart a horrid novel, is an interesting mix. A fun read.
