I read a lot ABOUT this book before reading it. I wasn't going to read it, but a friend asked me to so we could talk about it. I liked it a lot more than I anticipated. There has been so much furor about the author's parenting style, but it was more humble than I thought it would be. She is more poking fun at herself than telling others this is how you should raise your children. I also think the book had a lot of exaggeration in it to add to the humorous elements. I mean, come on, the author is a Yale Law School professor, is jetting around the world to give talks, and writes academic books. There is no way she has the time to berate her children all day as depicted in the book, even assuming that most household work is done by hired help. Some of her criticisms of "Western" parenting have some truth, such as our de-emphasis on rote learning (which is why our children don't master things as well) and that we give up to easily on boring tasks. Sometimes you need to deal with the boring before you can move on to the more interesting levels. I didn't see much of her parenting philosophy as being the special sphere of Chinese. I see many parents in hyper-educated, privileged enclaves behaving as she does. There is so much emphasis on creating the "perfect" child rather than the empathetic child, the caring child or the concerned with the larger community child.

The passion of the book is inescapable. The writing is like the music. Rarely have I read a book with language and words so lyrical. The flow of the story, of the characters, of the language is beautiful. At various points fast, slow, harsh, seductive, smooth... I'm about as musically inept a person as you can find, but it made me want to go out and dance.

The (original) Canadian title of this book is "The Rebel Sell" - the latest Canadian edition includes the authors' comments about the various international titles (chosen by publishers), among other things. Very interesting and challenging reading for lefties (like me) steeped in Adbusters, etc. Unfortunately, it's riddled with distractingly flippant passages that undermine the authors' arguments which actually, i think, merit serious consideration in many cases. Their feminist and anti-colonial critiques (such as they are) sadly, are cursory and weak. In short: a fascinating, infuriating, dissapointing, and brilliant book about why we have such a hard time making the world a better place.

I just finished this and it's a great insighful look into an Indian family liveing in Nrothern California who have to face the issues in their own lives after the youngest daughter tries to commit suicide. It's not depressing. Rather the daughter doesn 't die and comes home to lvie wiht the parents and refuses to speak. she communicate through cooking... Lovely read.

Chris Guillebeau offers advice that I will surely incorporate into my life. At times, however, he made it seem as if the only way to live a meaningful life was to accomplish extraordinary goals. Perhaps he has not completely convinced me to live his version of a life of non-conformity. For cannot average goals also provide meaning for an individual that is truly dedicated? I think the take-home message of this book is to not feel obligated to accomplish miraculous feats for the sake of recognition or legacy. I see this as conformity in itself. Rather, do something with your life that you genuinely love, and do not be pressured to change otherwise. You can truly make a difference, no matter how common or miniscule the act. I think that once you have found something that you want to put all your energy into, everyone will benefit. Do not think that you have to travel the world, start a business, or volunteer globally to be living a life of non-conformity. To find your true devotion in life and stick to it is non-conformity.
