Having liked some of her other books so much, I was disappointed that this was so conventionally plotted and that the characters never seemed to come alive. But her writing is beautiful.

Cheesy 'boy and his monster' tale. That it covers so many years of their lives together was an interesting choice, and I appreciated how it set up situations that ought to have felt surprising or tragic. But the prose was limp, and the story was way too simplistic and banal.

It is entirely possible that you will hate this book. Like really, violently hate it. It tends to provoke that response from certain people, and if you're one of them, I get it, I really do. If you aren't, though, there's a lot here to like. Not the least of these is that this is a book with all the trappings of postmodernism, like the footnotes (see, I told you that you'd hate it) that doesn't have the same bleak, aliented, and increasingly boring worldview of most postmodern fiction. This is a book that takes the 'self' that other books like it have been pulling apart for years, and tries to put it back together again. My feeling is that this is something that comes out of the time Wallace spent with addicts to get the AA sections right - these are, after all, people engaged in rebuilding themselves one step at a time. It looks like he saw these people and decided that, damnit, some things are just true. The state of footnote fiction being as it is, this turns out to be actually a shocking and original idea.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I already liked Kristin from her part on the West Wing, but didn't really know much else about her. I found her memoir witty, sweet, honest, a girl I increasingly wanted to know more about as the book went on.

This book was about three girls named Emily, Cassie, and Lydia who were all from Ashbury. These girls met three boys from a rival school, Brookfield High school. Although, these two schools have had a long lasting rivalry, the kids have become close pen pals because many of the teachers believe that it will bring the schools closer together. Through these letters we discover more about the characters and the adventures of these six students.

I've taught The Scarlet Letter a few times now and have read some of his short stories. I've even been to the house of seven gables in Salem, MA. For years I didn't know anything about this book, but when I looked it up, it sounded kind of interesting

Notes From The Midnight Driver was a great book. It has several life lessons that will guide you through difficult choices to make.

I love Wallace, but find him "difficult" because following all the threads requires real concentration over long stretches of narrative that are at best "creepy," to use one of his favorite words, and at worst just off-puttingly repulsive. Short pieces seemed like a good compromise, forgetting the inclusion of "hideous" in the title. A few of the stories ("Tri-Stan: I Sold Sissee Nar to Ecko", "Datum Centurio," and the two "The Devil Is a Busy Man" pieces) are overtly funny, and linguistically playful, and one ("Forever Overhad") moves smoothly from a 13-year old boy's lovingly described personal birthday challenge to a metaphor for life. Most drag the reader through a troubled, if not psychotic, point of view to a moment of startling revelation -- the last of the Brief Interviews (#20 in New Haven, CT) was the outstanding example -- but it is not a pleasant journey. Fans should have lots of fun tracking the origins of the film in Infinite Jest in "Tri-Stan."
