There really isn't much interesting to say about an immortal cell line, and there isn't much known about the woman from whom the cells were taken. The whole discussion in the book of who owns body tissues and who should profit from the research done on them seemed anachronistic: before HeLa, no cell lines had ever been functional for anything, and the issues didn't exist. The further discussion of what should be done with tissues today was discussed in only a fairly superficial way. That said, the interesting part of this book to me was the profile of Henrietta's descendants, the beliefs of the black community about medical researchers, their understanding of cloning, immortal cells, DNA, and other concepts I take for granted.

1977 Newbery Medal Winner Cassie Logan and her family live in rural Mississippi during the Depression where they must struggle to remain one of the lucky few land-owning black families. As the Logans and their acquaintances are attacked and demeaned by the majority of the whites in the community, Cassie finds that she must grow up all too quickly in order to understand the racism around her. I found it difficult to get into this book--the story started out very slow, focusing on Cassie and her siblings, and gradually became more intense as Cassie became aware of the adult problems around her. Maybe the author wrote it that way intentionally as at first, Cassie's parents tried to shield her more from the harshness of the world. The whole, complex issue of racism that this book brings up is very poignant, and at times, uncomfortable. I couldn't blame the Logan kids for wanting to take vengeance against their tormentors such as Lillian Jean, for example, especially in light of society constantly forcing them into such humiliating positions. At the same time, I felt that maybe Taylor was trying to show how taking revenge can reduce a person to the tormentor's level, and how racism poisons a whole culture. Even whites who tried to be friends with the Logans were treated with suspicion from them, and hatred from other whites. Bridging the gap after that much pain and mistrust takes a lot of time, and extraordinary people. As the plot ramped up to its inevitable conclusion, the suffering to which Southern black people have been subjected came into sharp focus, and the injustice was complete.

What makes Earl's tail wag? What I noticed about this book is a character who raises his hand to answer a question, before he is ready to provide an answer. Most students will be able to identify with this and you ccan use the character as a reminder to kids to only raise thier hands when they are ready. Literary activities may involve having students develop rhyming words that describe what makes Earl wag his tail happily.

I picked up this audio book because it won the 2008 Audie award for Thriller/Mystery. When I looked into the author (I had never heard of Joe Hill before), I learned that he was the son of Stephen King. That set my expectations high. Hill had a novel idea--buying a ghost over the internet--but I didn't feel any positive emotions for the main characters or find the plot particularly engaging. There were elements that were interesting but overall I found it a bit disappointing because I just didn't care enough about how it might turn out. I thought my teenagers would enjoy listening to it on a road trip, but it just put them to sleep (twice!).

This is the first Stegner book I've read and it didn't disappoint. The story follows two married couples from the time they meet as the husbands join the English department in Madison, WI, through a series of ups-and-downs that mark their lives. Stegner doesn't get too sentimental or cynical. His story is a really lovely depiction of how relationships form and ebb and flow in intensity. The characters are far from perfect, but this is what makes it so believable and compelling, and ultimately what makes you feel compassion for them.
