This is a really great collection of stories by Isaace Bashevis Singer. I found some of the tales disturbing, but I think that is partly what Mr. Singer was hoping to invoke in his readers, especially Jewish ones like me. I like the way he weaves in Jewish tradition, ritual, the way we used to speak in our older generations, and even a bit of mysticism from the kabalah. In the Introduction, he says this was a book that he didn't necessarily intend to write, but that it almost wrote itself. As compelling as it was, because he is such a great story-teller, I couldn't help wonder if he would rather have not written it. These stories really brings out some of the worst aspects of human character when it comes to relationships: infidelity, betrayal of trust, wives and husbands walking out on each other and/or deceiving each other, characters lacking forgiveness or charity, etc. I cannot say I liked this book, because some of these tales were just uncomfortable and the characters were despicable. It did make me think and the story-telling was excellent.

Great book to introduce Buddhist principles to the novice but also effective in reminding folks who've been calling themselves "Buddhist" for awhle what it is all about. Strips away all pretense and puts it all down in a way that speaks directly to a western practicioner. Read this one in an afternoon (quick 130 pages) but I plan on keepig it around to leaf through.

This was simultaneously brilliant and saddening. I didn’t expect these words to resonate quite as much as they did. I didn’t expect to be able to immediately apply them to my life. I was looking for a historical perspective, some sign that we are headed in the right direction. We are. At least, I think so. Unfortunately, those steps we have taken don’t seem as dramatic anymore. I mean, women can vote. They can run for office. They have been liberated from traditional sexual confines. They can take pride in just being. One of Wollstonecraft's biggest arguments was that women are socialized to appeal to men at their own expense. They don’t exercise their own wills or minds except for in a very limited sense. Where are they left when the passion dies? They are incapable of commanding respect or friendship. The best they can hope for is to be treated as lovely, mindless things whose sole purpose for existence is to satisfy the whims of the more dominant sex, which, after their mates have become habituated to their presence, is impossible. Popular culture still surrounds us with the idea that women need to be beautiful, that everything else is somehow secondary. It is important to be well dressed, to be thin. It bothers me that these words, so eloquently written so long go, have not prompted us to change the way we bring up our children. Beauty isn’t everything. Love isn’t everything. Relationships are not everything. We have to refine ourselves in order to refine our culture.

Although she, along with her mother, are shunned by their neighbors because she is illegitimate, fourteen-year-old Pen Downing is happy with her life in the English countryside in 1627. But her life falls apart when her mother drowns and Pen is sent to live with a couple who work her hard and take all her possessions. Desperate to be free of them, she runs away to London, hoping to make a living there. But on her very first day in the city, she is alone and bewildered. However, she is able to join a group of orphan children fighting for survival on the streets. The children are like a family, and though their existence is bare, they do manage to get by. It doesn't last very long, however. Pen and the others are abducted, and after a grueling stay in prison, herded like cattle onto a ship bound for the Virginia colony. The journey is miserable, and many die. But life for those that survive may be worse - they will have to survive seven years of servitude as bound servants once they arrive. Pen and one of the other girls, Rose, are fortunate to end up in a fairly good position, and Pen slowly adjusts to life in Virginia. But her other friends aren't as fortunate, and long to escape. And soon Pen will have to make a choice where she stands. I highly recommend this novel to fans of historical fiction. A similiar title I would recommend is A Stolen Life by Jane Louise Curry. It is set about a hundred years after this book, but it also tells of a young teenage girl sent against her will to be a servant in the colonies.

Civil war from a child-eye view, which is the sanest way to view it: why are people cruel and murderous to other people they don't even know and places they've never been? Terrific book, but I made it only about two-thirds of the way because it was due back after two weeks and nonrenewable, and I was moving house.
