Funny, honest account of the ups and downs of her transition to motherhood in the first year. One of my favorite lines, "having an infant around is like having a clock radio in your room that goes off erratically every few hours, always tuned to heavy metal.". Maybe it's because my second-born is only 1 month old, but I laughed out loud because it is so true for me.

Not sure if the English version would make much sense to me. But anyone interested in the relationship between love, sex and destiny should read this book. I wish I had it with me because I would read it over and over again. Paulo Coehlo is my favorite author of all time.

This novel is a beautiful piece of fiction. The characters are so layered and complex that you could not possibly "hear" everything Mootoo has to say about gender, sexuality, religion and post-colonialism is one reading. The story is set in a fictional colony called Lantanacamara and centres around a mysterious woman called Mala, who has arrived at the local nursing home. Tyler, Mala's caregiver, narrates Mala's story while telling his own, showing how they are connected. I loved this novel for its emphasis on individuality and personal choice.
