Odd and eclectic book. Reads almost like someone gathered a number of blog posts and sorted them by content into what is a coherent whole. While a thread runs through the entire thing, the topics start at the tricks of advertising and salesmanship, segway from there into the harmful effects a negative mind can have, continues into ways one can use to improve one's mind and make it more positive, and ends with talk of future research. While there isn't much exclusive or unique material in the book, the topics are linked in a way that I haven't seen done in other books. Despite that, I'm personally familiar with most of the topics mentioned and in such a short book the author wasn't able to go into much detail on each one, so for me it had limited usefulness. A few chapters read almost like advertising for the author's own InnerTalk program, and I suspect the book owns it's existence to that as much as anything else. An interesting read, but if you are already familiar with subconscious manipulation and modern popular metaphysics then you won't learn much new. Might still be worth it at only 360 pages.

I gave it 2 stars because the concept is pretty neat. You see, I'm a character driven type of person when reading. I need the characters to be so developed I feel like I actually know them. I need to care for them. These characters were not like that. Even the main character, Sam. I honestly did not care if he lived or died. Will I read the rest of the series? I'm not sure yet. I own the 2nd one. But, still just not that sure.

Good introduction to the world of hedge funds from Barton Biggs, a legendary value investor who spent 30 years at Morgan Stanley. This is NOT an investing book. Rather, it's an anecdote-filled and well-written account of what it's like to be a value investor and to work in investment management. It helps if you have some basic familiarity with investment management before going into it, and it's advice is especially good for all you recent HBS grads who want to start your own hedge fund. :)
