Can't give this book 5 stars because I knew the answer to the main plot question as soon as the incident happened - can't say much without giving away the story. It took another 400 plus pages to get to the end to verify what I already knew. I thought that the thing Emma did was unrealistic for a mother who has spent her whole life trying to protect her autistic son. I realize that the author had to put this in the novel because she had to have some way to move the plot along. I also understand that she was trying to tell a story that gave the readers insight into autism but I don't think she needed to take over 500 pages to tell it - perhaps we were supposed to figure out the answer early on - I don't know. We had to wade through to the end before she ever explained the entire reason why Jacob did what he did (although, again I knew the reason long before we were told). Even knowing what really happened, I was forced to read (as quickly as possible) on because I didn't know if the author would end it the way I was hoping. There really wasn't an ending as such; the reader had to determine in a way if everyone understood everything and in a way, that's not a bad thing. We don't know about Emma's life following all this, but again, we can surmise. All in all, worth the read and kudos to Jodi for always taking up a cause in her novels and teaching us something about her subject. 3-1-14 Addendum Read again and listened to the audio for a library book club and felt the same way I did in my original review except that I didn't really say what bothered me the most about this novel and that is the way nobody would listen to what Jacob tried to tell them. Even though he didn't always say things in a way they would necessarily immediately understand, his family should have been much more aware of what he was trying to tell them. After all, they knew him very well and instead of taking the time to really LISTEN, they just assumed that what they saw on the surface was correct. It was very frustrating to read but I suppose Jodi did that on purpose to show how frustrating it would be to live with Asperger's both for the person with it and the people around him. Also...the ending rather SUCKED! To wade through this long book, knowing the answer the whole time, and then to get that ending??? She more or less tied it up but not enough. Probably should have dropped 1/2 star just because of that!

3.5 stars Amelia has been drifting in a world that fluctuates between nightmares and nothingness until she sees a boy in the river, drowning. Suddenly, all she wants is to save him. Her attempts prove fruitless because she is dead herself. But then, in a sudden moment, she connects and the boy is saved. Amelia and Joshua have an unusual bond between them. Joshua can see and talk to Amelia. Their bond grows as they try to solve the mysteries surrounding Amelia’s death while keeping their relationship a secret from the world that would view Joshua as crazy and his grandmother who is an exorcist. But an evil spirit, Eli, is determined to make Amelia his own and take her to his ghost world forever. Was this a ghost story? I would say I’m not usually a fan of ghost stories, so I’m thinking this wasn’t really that ghost-ish. I would call it paranormal with “beings” and more romance. Maybe it was the romance that I liked the best… No, it really wasn’t, although I did enjoy that part too. What I really liked in this book was Amelia’s road to awareness and self discovery. It had my curiosity levels high. Amelia goes from this nothingness sort of existence, one nightmare to another, without any real concept of time or place to a gradual awareness of not only herself but others. It’s like that head starts ticking again and then connects with her heart and BAM, she realizes there is so much more to her existence. It was a fun journey to begin with her. Joshua is a good sort, isn’t he? Very sweet and curious. He sure takes the whole ghost and seer thing well. I wasn’t over the moon about Joshua like I have been about some characters I’ve read, but I liked him. I think there is more to this guy to be discovered though. The book left me with so many questions unanswered. I’m hoping for a sequel! I really enjoyed this read. There was frequent mild language and profanity, for those of you who are concerned with that.

So the book starts out pretty basic, Deet is a kid with no friends who pretty much runs his family because his parents are to busy. Deet's dad is actually his step dad, he's never met his real dad. But his step dad is dad to Deet. With the economy so bad his dad has to work two jobs to take care of the three kids and his wife. When you don't expect it, the book get a lot more involved and his dad goes to jail for using drugs to keep himself awake for both job. At first Deet was really scared about visiting his dad, but once his mom goes to work he decides to make it part of his after school schedule. He starts to realize that these people all have stories just like his dad, and that prison is nothing like it is in the movies. I really like this book because it keeps you guessing and you never expect what happens. I like that it is written so Deet comes right out and says how he feels unlike other books where people deny their feelings all the time. Kirkpatrick Hill makes it really easy for me to relate to the book. I'm not saying everyone will, but I definatly knew exactly how Deet felt! I would recommend this book to anyone who can handle it. It's kind of a more mature book. The only thing I didn't like was the last two pages. I'm not gonna tell you what happened, but I thought that there were a million other ways the book could have ended and that wasn't the best choice.
