It did take me several weeks, and eventually a train ride I couldn't get out of to finish this book. All the characters, all the twists and plot points and cultural things I didn't quite understand made it more interesting. It's big, and epic...and epic is the word I want to use to explain it. It's not light reading. It feels historical and complicated, like watching all of HBO's Rome in one sitting, there's a lot to absorb. It still paints a picture of what was important then, and now, with dark, thick strokes of prose. I don't know if I've read anything else in that style or will any time soon.

I love Talmage's writing style. Even approaching a Gospel topic, he writes in a way that is very scholarly and academic. It is a style that I appreciate, because it is a style quite similar to the way I write. The content in the book was absolutely amazing, given that it deals not only with the Savior's mortal ministry, but his pre-mortal role and his role in the Restoration. It's a "must-read" for any Latter-day Saint.

Got this book as a near free-be at a library sale and decided to give it a look, having heard it mentioned for eons, and then the movie, albeit a long while ago. Couldn't get into it. Didn't finish it. Couldn't care enough about the characters. Good for Hollywood I guess.
