I liked the overall plot of this book, found it to be a fast read, enjoyed the characters, and it held my interest. It is kind of a rough read in spots because the writing - especially dialogue - doesn't quite hang together all the time. I had to do a fair amount of rereading to figure out who was saying what at times. I was also quite surprised to find a lot of typos, as this is not a self-published book and is, in fact, put out by a major publisher (Bantam). Of course this can be easily overcome while reading, but it's a disappointment. I'll offer only one other criticism: this author really needs to consult a thesaurus for words to use other than "grinning." It seems like every character in this book does nothing but grin. Can't they smile, or smirk, or something else once in awhile? The author does do a good job describing a brutal Iowa winter; unfortunately, I know all too well what those are like. Finally, except for one part (I don't write spoilers so will just say it involves the motivation for the crime that is central to the story) I found the plot to be plausible, which helped make it enjoyable.

This is an amazing story of survival. The story itself is incredible, but it is the detail with which it's told--including many excerpts from journals which were kept by several of the survivors--that makes it special. Hats off to Albert Lansing for telling a very balanced, well-paced, consistent tale. Upon reflection, I imagine his task of determining what *not* to include was his greatest challenge. He chose well. I will take away two things from this book: 1.) Disposition is everything. Yes, these men were highly skilled in their various fields, but the trait they shared almost to a person was optimism. Lansing mentions that Shackleton chose these men based mostly on gut instinct. I believe he chose one skilled person over another because he knew on some level that they were the upbeat sort. His ability to choose a great team was key to their survival. 2.) Men are hard core. One could easily argue that the expedition was absolutely foolhardy to begin with and that you would not find a similarly large group of women taking it on for that fact alone. However, I simply couldn't help wondering how the same journey composed of an all-women team would have gone. I can't say that a team of similarly skilled women could not do it. But I am in awe of these men and have to tip my hat to the gender in general for their historic propensity to take on and survive grueling expeditions born of an irrepressible desire for exploration.

Good information divided into sections so it's easy to flip around and read up on what you need to know.

I really liked this book. Although, the end seemed a bit rushed and a little too "happily ever after," it was still a good read 95% of the way through.

Lessing's essays/lectures are nothing on her fiction, but I am always impressed by her prescience--in this case, predicting the rise of behavioral economics and psychology long before those fields gained in scope and popularity. She is far too complacent about global capitalism here, but she was still, I suspect, over-compensating for her prior allegiance to communism. Her warning that democracy is always precarious is something we must constantly be reminded of and often forget.

Where are we? Oddly, though Blaedel is Danish, this story could as easily been set in any American city rather than Copenhagen. The place names were Danish but there was no wisp of Scandinavia. The plot was so so but only just. I hate the title. It’s too twee and only becomes relevant late in the story. Homicide Detective Louise Rick and her partner investigate a rape. Soon the case grows legs when rapist’s next victim dies and other women speak out about enduring similar attacks. The plot circles around the dangers of internet dating and its subculture. Blaedel states that there are two types of internet daters. One group post profiles to meet someone for a long term relationship then disappear from the dating sites when they find one. The other group becomes addicted to the online dating process and put profiles up in multiple places for long periods of time. They’re serial daters who are not interested in the people they meet but the process of online dating. The rapist belongs to this second group. He’s an online predator and knows how to disappear into the ethers after his crimes. Detective Rick’s relationships with her best friend Camilla and her live in lover Peter also seem off. There’s no evident affection between them and though Rick’s well characterized neither Camilla nor Peter are. It wasn’t a bad story it just wasn’t good. Definitely steer clear of it if you’re looking for one of the many great new Scandinavian books.
