I probably would've liked it more if I'd read the first one first. But it's taking the library forever to get it to me, so I went ahead with the second. It's got some good information, but there's more of the author's own opinions and commentaries than I would've liked. i.e. It's okay to sway from pure C.M. teachings in this area but not in others. But all in all I got some useful information from it.

The chronology of this book hurt my head, even though I was fascinated with the story from the very first page. What it required was letting go of the reins, if you are a person who likes a somewhat linear story progression. I had to resist keeping track of the when and where, I had to surrender trying to make the plot behave with mathematical precision. Once I did that, I realized the book for what it is--intense, touching, completely gripping, and an entirely genuine love story. Fantastic.

** spoiler alert ** Jesus' 40 days in the desert. Five people go into the desert and meet up with a woman and her husband who should have died. Jesus inadvertantly heals him. Jesus goes to a high cave and fasts. The others fast during the day but eat and drink at night. The trader (the man who should have died) wants a woman there because she wants to get pregnant and gets money from the others. Jesus dies but his spirit comes to the woman and heals her after the trader rapes her. Trader's wife and woman run away, as do the other men. A wee bit sacrilegious, but a good story.

I read this on the recommendation of a friend and then suggested it to my dad. The chief and I had such fun talking about this one. I keep wanting to read it again, so I might just have to buy a copy.

"Tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms further…And on fine morning - / So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." Loves it. Almost as good as The Beautiful and The Damned. It especially resonates in our current time, when everyone is obsessed with image and celebrity. Decadence, much?

It was interesting to read a book that involves Afghanistan and Afghan culture, particularly since it pertains to the current political climate. It is a good story, well written and interesting.

Beautiful, wonderful and amazing series! All 3 of Mr. Bernstein's memoirs are amazing and I'm so glad he lived to finally write his story down. Very tragic and sad in so many parts, but the resilience and determination of Mr. Bernstein and his mother is rejuvinating and reassuring. Should be a movie or mini series. I want to meet Harry!

"On a tip to his home town, the rabbi of his family's synagogue asks Albom to say his eulogy. In a quandary about how to eulogize someone he doesn't know well, Albom decides to visit with the rabbi whenever possible to learn more about his life. He has interviews with the rabbi over a period of several years and during this time, he meets the minister of a very poor, mostly black congregation in Detroit, where Albom lives. Although their personal lives contrast markedly, the rabbi and the minister have similar religious principles and compassion for their congregants. Both teach by example as much as by what they preach." --SA / Systems
