If you think your childhood was not the best see where this book will take you. I have flashes of this book when I read other stories about famlies and especialy life in the south. Makes my own life look soft by comparison yet we had a tight life on a coal miners budget. It puts "things" in perspective when I think about what things in life are needed versus wanted. I think we often want more than we need. I love the authors style and felt like I lived near tem by the time I finished the book. I

What will make you read this book? Or not read it? That is the question. I totally loved this awesome overview of the emotional, physiological, biological, historical and sociological ways that decision making works. Far more engrossing and thorough than Gladwell's "Blink", this read keeps on hitting all the way through. Why is Tom Brady a great quarterback? Why is poker an order of magnitude more difficult than backgammon? Why does losing hurt more than winning rewards? How do decision-based game shows operate? What is the root of empathy? And of sympathy? And altruism? Lehr covers a lot of ground. Never overwhelming, always slightly astonishing, sort of required reading for business and life.

Intriguing fantasy novel that's quite far from regular elf-and-orcs fare. Dazzlingly original, with lots of wordplay and deep characterisations.

The person that gave me this book told me that it'd change the way I view the world; I wouldn't quite go that far but it's definitely an interesting perspective and a really creative story! Alot of good lessons ... "...if you are still you will be better able to hear."

This was one of the better Non-Required Reading Comps over the years. Although, I think I say that about all of them. Of course there were particular essays I wasn't crazy about, but those were the minority and I only skipped over one because I started falling asleep as I was reading it (Iraqi constitution...I sound ignorant saying this...but I think reading the United States Constitution has the same effect on me). I was also at work at the time... Overall, this was fantastic. I'd recomend all of the previous volumes as well because they're simply fantastic. It's like reading This American Life...no problems there. Highlights were the David Rakoff, Michael Lewis, Murakami, and comic strip about North Korea as well as the Julia Sweeney article Letting Go Of God (her essay about finding her inherent atheism) which was brilliant...as she usually is. Many of the topics dealt with Iraq and the war and were fascinating and heart-breaking. It was nice to see so much devoted to that and I think the kids who edited this really did a huge service in chosing to focus on that. Also, may I add that this is really edited by a bunch of high school kids who are people who give me hope for mankind?! Well, yes, they are. The editors of this anthology are the antithesis of that My Sweet Sixteen show on MTV. They're also way smarter than most "grown-ups". Not everything was focused on topical issues involving Iraq, there was an entire selection devoted to fake headlines, blog entries, Daily Show moments, words and phrases, as well as an utterly hilarious treastise on Hoboes. This also includes an essay by the late, great Kurt Vonnegut which he ends by saying: "And if I die-God forbid-I would like to go to heaven to ask somebody in charge up there, "Hey, what was the good news and what was the bad news?' Go read this.

Not as good as the first storyline, but still liked the world.

"Nearly ten years old, the book holds forth three different scenarios that a "future China" might look like. China has come a long way and these three scenarios are still possibilities although one of them (collapse followed by rise of a military dictator) doesn't seem as likely as it once did. Just the sort of fun book about China that is banned in China."

McCloud uses comics to explain comics in this smart, original, well-researched study of the history, vocabulary, and artistic merit of sequential art. Recommended for all comics readers and anyone who has a hard time "getting" graphic novels.
