I adore Atwood and I loved Oryx and Crake. I initially didn't think the story of God's Gardeners would be as enthralling as the story of the scientists in O&C, but you stitch the two together and get a vibrant world that these characters inhabit. Add to that the dry humor and satire. Couldn't put it down.

This book is a cross between Twilight, The Da Vinci Code, and The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane. I liked all three of those books, and liked this one too. It's the story of a Yale professor, Diana Bishop, who is doing research in the Bodleon Library at Oxford, when she comes across a bewitched manuscript. Diana, who is a witch herself, feels its power but sends it back to the stacks, since she has decided not to practice any witchcraft. Soon she is drawn into a web of intrigue in this world where unwitting humans co-exist with witches, vampires, and daemons. She can ignore her powers no longer. This book has it all - suspense, historical references, and romance. And 580 pages of it all, no less!! And I turned those pages very quickly, as the situation became more engrossing and suspenseful, the romance heated up (and heated up!), and the historical references more vital to the story. So why the 4 stars instead of 5? Spoilers follow Because nothing is resolved at the end! Nothing! Nothing! Nothing!! I have never read a book that had a less resolved ending in my entire life. It was exactly as if the book ended at the end of any given chapter. There are at least 5 major plot points that are still unresolved! Yes, I want to read the sequel. But she'd better resolved SOMETHING in the next 580 pages!

Fresh, fast narration. Truly original, in my opinion. Spanglish that makes me realize how much I've forgotten of my Spanish, but that provides enough context for me to go on squeaking by in denial of how much I've lost. Fun to keep up with various narrators and to follow in the -- dare I say -- fuku of a refreshingly non-archetypal character, Oscar. Also, I learned plenty about the Dominican Republic, a people and a culture I knew virtually nothing about.

I read this on a recommendation, and really enjoyed the preview that was posted for the kindle edition. First off, Cannon has all the marks of a great writer. I liked the characters, I liked the story and even the who-done-it revelation at the end was a surprise. I don't really care for first person, although she does a great job with it. It's even a fast read (I finished it in about five hours total). However, even with all that, I only liked it. I didn't feel as if there was anything extraordinary about the tale that made me want to read the rest of the books, which is a shame since she leaves so much unanswered at the end of the novel that no doubt progresses with her series. It's a great Sunday quick read, I will give it that, but it just didn't drive me to immediately visit Amazon for the next installment. I still think it's worth a read if you like young adult paranormal, etc. Cannon is clearly a talented author, but storywise, "Beautiful Demons" just wasn't my cup of tea.

One of the most wonderful books I've ever read. It's touched my heart like no other, and I'll re-read it anytime I need to believe again. :)
I read this book several years ago. It is now the Vermont Reads book for this year. The time is WWII and the protagonists are a Japanese American family. The story is told from three points of view, first the mother's, as they prepare to go to the concentration camp, then the 11 year old daughter, and then the younger brother. The father is imprisoned as an enemy of the state. The descriptions of their preparations, of their time in the camp, and of their return home are bleak and stark and told without emotion. Julie Otsuka has drawn on the real life experiences of her relatives to tell the story. This book is written at a YA level, but is also suitable for adults.

Short book. It made me sad. It sort of never ends, just like it never truly begins. Its just a glimpse, a small one, into the life of a man who has been forgotten by those who owe him most: his country.
