This is probably my favorite culinary story books, behind kitchen confdential. It is a great book broken up into three "mini-books." They are: following a chef as he takes his Certification for Master Chef. Thomas Keller, from start until now, and about a restaurant named LOLA, that has been finally get some press lately. Really a great book.

This book provides a unique look at what life may have been like for Elizabeth long before she was queen. It's easy for historical figures like Elizabeth to become so much larger than life that we forget they were real people, once. Elizabeth I recreates the emotions and thoughts of an adolescent girl in a way that shows that even a princess feels the universal emotions of loneliness, fear, and doubt. Elizabeth I addresses two themes especially well: a daughter's longing for her father's affection, and a keen political mind's awareness of what it takes to be a successful ruler. Despite the fact that he had her mother beheaded, Elizabeth still loves her father and lives for the moments when he shows her favor. She is also an astute observer of the goings on in the world of royals and nobility, and early on comes to the realization that if she should become Queen, she must remain unmarried to retain her rule. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves diaries and memoirs and takes an interest in the intricacies of queendom.

To say anything would be giving away too much. Start with number one (Ring). Reread in 2012.

This is one of those stories that starts out with multiple plotlines that are seemingly unrelated, but which eventually converge. In Brooklyn, two old men (significantly, a German and a Jew) are involved in a traffic-related altercation, which first escalates to road rage, and then culminates in a fiery accident. Meanwhile, across the globe, things unravel for the spy (assassin?) Scylla, as his contacts are apparently compromised and an attempt is made on his life. Lastly, we meet the marathon man: aspiring runner and Columbia U. post-grad history student Thomas Babington "Babe" Levy, who is struggling to find his place in world, and come to terms with his father's death. Author William Goldman does a great job of bringing these disparate threads together in a way that makes perfect sense, with a few OMG moments along the way. Goldman wrote the screenplay of the movie version, and it’s purportedly a very faithful adaptation. I didn’t remember much of it as I was reading along; I saw the movie a long time ago. But I couldn’t help but visualize the late Sir Laurence Olivier, as the sociopathic ex-Nazi Dr. Christian Szell, asking Levy, repeatedly and in a chilling monotone, “is it safe?” Marathon Man is a tense, fast-paced thriller, written by the same guy who wrote The Princess Bride.

Awesome. Fantastic. Great. Donald Miller's unconventional theories are based on his own experiences - when he walked away from God in his teen years, and his long road back. He speaks of love and relationships, instead of rules and more rules.

Argh this is giving me a headache. I may not make it. I have a feeling Derrida works a lot better if you already have a solid grounding in structuralism (this is post-structuralism) or in any eighteenth to twentieth century philosophy first. I don't, really, or not enough.

#3 my favorite Harry Potter. The best story line, after this they feel too forced and lose the magic for me.
