Intense and passionate Ms.Arundhati Roy writes... "Donald Rumsfeld said that his mission in the War Against Terror was to persuade the world that Americans must be allowed to continue their way of life. When the maddened king stamps his foot, slaves tremble in their quarters. So, standing here today, it's hard for me to say this, but The American Way of Life is simply not sustainable. Because it doesn't acknowledge that there is a world beyond America...." What do you think?

Kind of interesting, but nothing really new or surprising here. Might've been groundbreaking insight in 2004, but by now we've heard it all so his concepts just seem repetitive.

Having grown up about an hour from DesMoines around the same time period, I could really relate to his memories. Great fun to read.

This is perhaps my favorite Marquez book, which i valiantly attempted to read in the original Spanish (an English translation was always nearby). Nevertheless, it is quite different in style than other novels by Marquez; and I couldn't quite understand how until I found out that he was to some extent emulating Kafta's The Metamorphosis. My theory on the events of the story is that very few people in the town--even up until the very point of the murder--actaully believed the Vicario brothers would actually make good on their threats. It struck me that the situation was treated rather like the drama of a telanovela, something you gossip about and the more lurid the better. Subsequently, most people in the town make up lame rationalizatons for their moral turpitude. You have to hand it to the narrator for having the courage to try, after over 20 years, to understand what happened and why...

Really liked the story line and REALLY liked the hero, Kevin. The heroine, Beth, however was not a fave for me. Kevin sees Beth in the bar he owns being groped by a man. He basically goes to "save" her from unwanted attentions and ends up getting her fired from her job (the unwanted attentions were from her boss, who apparently has been doing this for months). They meet up again when Beth is working as a bartender for Kevin's brother's wedding. The end up sleeping together and she leaves in the morning (after Kevin unintentionally kicks her out). She finds out she's pregnant and goes to tell Kevin. He's actually very supportive and willing to help/support her in any way. Unfortunately, through the entire book, she pushes him away - doesn't want to depend on anyone - can only be friends - tells Kevin he doesn't know what he feels - fights every nice thing Kevin or his family does for her . . . and on and on and on. If she showed a more gradual warming up to Kevin and the possibility of a relationship, or was willing to see where a relationship would go, instead of thinking that if they didn't work out then they couldn't be friends and she would be all alone . . . she started out alone, how big a change would it be from her current circumstances . . . aside from having a baby? The entire book was a "one step forward, two steps back" experience. Until the last few pages when she suddenly decides that she loves him and wants a relationship with him (and to be a family). I would have definitely rated this book higher if it weren't for the heroine being so stand-offish through the bulk of the story.

Relationships between women are complex at best—made all the more so by social pressures and family ties. Ms. Umrigar weaves her tale so beautifully that the true, destructive ugliness under the surface sneaks up on the reader. Her characters are people we know or can see in our selves in spite of cultural differences. Perhaps this is one of the reasons the story moved me so deeply. Ms. Umrigar tells a simple yet eternal story with grace and palpable emotion within a world that is exquisitely drawn. The first and last line echo each other in a way that makes the entire novel feel like a poetic experience. The Space Between Us has earned a place on the shelf of books that I treasure and read over and over. It's one of the best books I have read in quite awhile.

this one is a well spoken review of the zeitgeistic similar occurences between the art world and the world of new physics. the premise is sometimes a bit of a stretch but an enjoyable read for anyone who appreciates art because of the interesting juxtaposition of two seemingly disparate disciplines.

This was a really great overview of poisons, both in telling great stories of poisonings, as well as giving some technical information on the effects of several poisons. My favorite part though was probably where they were discussing the puffer fish and its use in "zombification" according to Vodoo religions.

Terribly outdated, and not in a good way.
