Part of me loves this sweet story, accompanied by photographs, of a signing gorilla interacting with its pet kittens. But I am also left a little unsettled by how unnatural this is. A few minutes of internet research on Koko's trainer leaves me more disturbed. I would like to do more research to sort out my feelings on Koko's life and this book.

Review originally posted at Ramblings From This Chick Paying the Piper started of okay for me, but after a few chapters it just became so monotonous. If I had to hear Grace whine one more time about how it was unfair of her father to sell her mothers bar I was going to shoot myself. Even when Grace found out the reasoning behind it (which in my opinion was valid) she continued to bitch and moan. Then there is Jimmy, whom I didn't really understand. He seems to be really attracted to Grace and they start to have something and then he just pushes her aside as if she means nothing to him. It just seemed so out of character for what we had previously been shown of him. My other peeve about this book is the coming together of Grace and Jimmy. From the get go, these two are pretty hot for each other and have some pretty racy thoughts. Then when they finally get together the author shows some pretty hot foreplay and then just cuts to the next scene without showing the actual "coming together." This is one of my biggest pet peeves when reading. If you are going to put everything else in, then why wouldn't you put in the sex scene? Leave out the rest then. It just feels as if it isn't flowing well when that happens. All in all, this wasn't a horrible book despite the rating. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

So, I know this is a good book. Maybe even a great book. But still...it is not the best book ever. Maybe my annoyance with the book has nothing to do with the book at all, but instead, the aura surrounding the book. Even further unrelated to the book itself is my annoyance with people who characterize things as being "Great Gatsby-like," or want things (like parties) to have a "Great Gatsby theme" when really, they just mean the 1920's. My favorite website sums up my feelings very well right here: [http://gofugyourself.typepad.com/go_f...]. To conclude, something is not inherently "Great Gatsby-like" unless someone dies in a pool.

If you want to understand Bell's theorem in layman's terms this is the book. Easy read, fantastic achievement to get difficult messages across.

I absolutely loved this book. Janie is such a strong female character... even after all she has gone through by the end of the novel. Experiencing all of her trials and successes with her make this book such a joy to read.

I know there are alot of reasons people dislike this story because of the so called mirroring of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings this story so called seems to have portrayed. I too almost felt this way until I realized that there were other stories and movies that had similar characterics of other stories and movies. Anyways, I really like Eragon because it showed me that no matter what hardship that boy had to go through he never backed down from a situation and there were plenty of times he could have gave in. People need to realize that young folks need stories like Eragon to show them that there is a futrue ahead not matter what it takes it can be a great futrue. On to Eldest....

The New York Times Magazine article that her wrote on the subject will suffice. He doesn't have that much more to say on the topic, other than some personal anecdotes.

Rob Sheffield uses a fun device of starting each chapter with a listing of songs from a mix tape to tell his story. It chronicles the time leading up to and when he met his wife, as well as chronicling their marriage. It is not a "happy" story, and he explores some angst and repressed emotions here as well as surprising early-life tragedy. He is a good writer and keeps this autobiographical exploration engaging. If you are a true music/music history lover, especially of late 80's/early 90's music, add a star.
