Great unexpected story. Slow start but develops into complex character web, lovely historical detail as well, on what used to be the most cosmopolitan city in the US. Supposedly a local author. Highly recommended.

One of my all-time favorite books. One of the few books I've read more than once.

This was my common book at Otterbein--the book that all incoming freshman have to read in an attempt to unify them. The author comes to speak and sign copies of the books, and the entire year sort of centers around this book. Reading it over the summer with no guidance was pretty tough. The book jumps back and forth across several time periods, and I had a hard time keeping up with what was happening when, and why. I ended up rebelling, and read the entire book chronologically instead, so I got a completely different view of the story than my classmates did. A book about Jesuits in space didn't seem like it would be that great, but in the end I really enjoyed it and I even bought the sequel, Children of God, although I have never actually read it. This book is as much a story about space travel as Life of Pi is just a story about a kid on a boat. Read: not at all. It all comes down to faith--what we have faith in and why, and what happens when our faith shatters as it sometimes can.

This book turned out to be not exactly what I expected. The first section is broadly similar to other post-nuclear war novels, as the protagonist travels through the devastated Western US. Gordon poses as a postal inspector from what he calls the "Restored United States" (a complete fabrication). Originally a scam to get a free meal and bed, Gordon realizes that he can actually help the small villages set up a simple postal network. However, as the story progresses, a number of science fiction elements are introduced, which dilutes the story, in my opinion. The novel is best when the emphasis is more on the people trying to improve their situation and restore a little bit of life before the destruction wrought by war, and less about sci-fi gadgets.

"Part police procedural, part speculative fiction, part fantasy and part magic realism ... China Mieville crams it all into this fascinating study of two cities which are really the same city, on different levels of existence. A murder occurs in one city, but the body shows up in the other. Two detectives put their lives and careers on the line - one is forever changed." --DB/Reference

This book re-framed the development history debate. He makes his point through very dense historical examples. I think I learned as much about archeology as I learned about this debate on the evolution of human societies.

In the same vein as the Turning of the Screw, this is one of the best ghost/supernatural/suspense stories I've ever read. Definitely a classic! And if you've seen the 1990s film version starring Owen Wilson and Catherine Zeta Jones, try your best to put that out of your memory.

Hmmm...I liked it...but I still have a hard time delving into the faerie world. It was good with interestingly flawed characters. I will read the next one if there is one.

Maybe not the best bedtime book, but fascinating
