An excellent fantasy novel, the first in a series of 4. It follows several people from several families in a fantastic kingdom/world as they all vie for the power to rule the empire. Light on sorcery/magic but heavy on intrigue and deceit, this novel should appeal to all kinds of people. *** edit *** It seems there are going to be 7 books total, but only 4 have been published so far. That sucks. I hate waiting 5 years to finish a series.

Juliet Landau is amazing!!! I must admit, when I heard the actress who played Drusilla had written the arc about that character, my expectations were extremely low. I always knew, based on her performance, that Landau really understood this character. But apparently, she has a flair for cinematic storytelling as well. Lynch, also, really has a great grasp on these characters. The Gunn/Illyria story covers, for me, everything that was in the Illyria mini-series in a much for interesting way, further solidifying for me that Haunted was a waste of paper. The final two arcs are whimsical and fun but also appropriate and in line with the Buffy/Angel universe. Great collection. I hope the final entries are just as good.

This book was better than the third, but not nearly as good as the first. I was hoping for exciting and fun and a "don't want to put it down" kind of book to read with Irene. It wasn't that.

This is bad in class writing exercise, which is too damn bad. I'm a Garland fan. The Beach was great and Tesseract was interesting- but you should give this one a miss. Garland is writing Zombie movies these days. Go see one of those.
