I had been waiting for a year to read this latest installment in Tom Lloyd'd series. I was not disappointed. I had reread the first two in the series before picking up this latest one. I was surprised how much detail I had forgotten in just a year from the first two. Tom Lloyd jumps right back into the after affects of the second novel and the upsurge of religious hatred and the attempts of leaders to direct that hatred. I enjoy this authors writing style and the central characters. Usually when I read a book structured the same way, following a number of storylines and characters in different places I find myself wishing that the author would go back to a particular storyline, and find the cuts between jarring and annoying. But not with this series. The third book moves around more than the first two but I did't get annoyed. The ending was a big surprise...no spoilers here and I look forward to the next book.

I finished reading this book well over a month ago, and i'm still thinking about it, the more I do, the more fond I am of Pi and the story. So i'm going to up my rating to 4 stars, despite the slow start to this book. 6 months after completing it, i'm STILL thinking about it! Only a great book can do that, upping to 5 STARS! Can't wait to read it again!

I enjoyed this one much more than I did the first Capital book with Julia. Logan and Maddy had a sweet story, but still there were some parts that just felt forced or as though I'd skipped pages in the story. Not anywhere near as good as I've come to expect from a Kleypas romance.

I bought a 50¢ copy of this book years ago on a bargain bin spree at either Housing Works or the Strand. Until recently, every time I paged through it I couldn't help but deride its maddeningly simple-minded premise: in a series of lectures at Cambridge in the 1950s, Carr set out to actually answer the question what is history. Is history a science? Are there "causes" for historical events? What is fact? And, yes, this is as boring as one might expect. You advance through a few pages of this kind of freshman exegesis and you start asking "Are you serious?" over and over. Yet, and of course, Carr wins you over, oh word booty. He builds on these simple questions and lays out a truly compelling progressive theory of history. He lets you in on conversations he's been having with himself about his profession, the thing that clearly animates his entire life, and it's an honest and rare little inspiration. Plus, he gently mocks conservatives now and then. Here's a wonderful bit about the hidden cost of conservatism that made me mentally pump my fist: In ordinary life we are more often involved than we sometimes care to admit in the necessity of preferring the lesser evil, or of doing evil that good may come. In history the question is sometimes discussed under the rubric 'the cost of progress' or 'the price of revolution.' This is misleading. As Bacon says in the essay On Innovations, 'the forward retention of custom is as turbulent a thing as an innovation.' The cost of conservation falls just as heavily on the under-privileged as the cost of innovation on those who are deprived of their privileges. The thesis that the good of some justifies the sufferings of others is implicit in all government, and is just as much a conservative as a radical doctrine.

Drinkwater is first lieutenant on a small cutter that tangles with a French provocateur and ends with the battle of Camperdown as viewed from the deck of a very small cutter. Again, fabulous characterization, gruesome action, and dark nuance.
