Another selection from Hermione's Chapter of the Greater Common Sense Book Club. My recommendation---but not universally applauded. I loved the quirkiness of the book's structure; the precocious main character; and the unpredictability of the novel. Other readers found it too long and thought the characters not sympathetic. I gobbled it up and recommended it to the club thinking everyone would react the way I did. NOT SO.

"The Point," which originally apppeared in The New Yorker and then later in BASS, is one of the best short stories I have ever read and I return to it all the time and find more to admire each time I do. I admire it for the clean line of plot progression, the articulation of desire statements, and also the neat thing D'Ambrosio does with his back story--placing it at the end of the piece, where it also sheds like on the key thematic passage and the speaker's "theory of the black hole." Other stories in this collection are equally masterful.

This is a lyrically written novel of a grown son reconciling with his dying father. It is beautifully written and Geye masterfully evokes place. I felt as though I had visited Minnesota and Lake Forsone during a cold November. The relationship between father and son and is undramatic and yet very realistic. A great book. I highly recommend it. 4 out of five stars - I really liked it.

The book stands out from the typical self-help/business books by tackling ideas like the Deferred Life Plan or the distinction between passion/drive with honesty, intelligence and simplicity. Beware there are some anecdotes in the book where the author did not follow and arguably contradicts the book's (his own) tenets, but things worked out for him quite quite well (re Claris Corp.). In the author's defense, the point of the book is (echoed elsewhere too) that there is no provable certainty about the future and sometimes you stumble across a perfect opportunity that rewards you quickly, but accidentally. C'est la vie. However, this book is a great reminder about what to focus on in life. Recommend it to anyone interested in venture capitalist culture, entrepreneurship and to those who need to re-focus on what is important.
